Got a reply to my email ....
Hi Raymond,
The gearbox was stolen from the workshop that was busy with repairs on the car.
The bumpers where sent in to get repainted as they had some scratches and the rest of the car is spotless.
The engine is and has always been covered up and wrapped and I only opened it up to take pics for the ad.
I have all the parts ,covers and accessories for the motor even the bolts and nuts.
The price might seem high for a 98 model but it is a 4.4L motorsport and is worth quite a bit more than the normal 540i autos witch are 4.0L.
My price is negotiable and you are welcome to come have a look at it and make an offer
Kind regards.

Where is the gearbox ?
Why were the bumpers removed ?
How long has the motor stood without the inlet manifold on ?
Where is the cover for the oil filter housing ?
The price is high for a 1998 model , what are you willing to accept considering the motor needs to be stripped etc ?
Thanks
Raymond

I don't believe all that the guy writes - why was the motor/box taken out ? Why is the motor being stripped ? etv .

I'm sure once you explain to him that all E39 540's were 4.4l, he'll be alot more negotiable... And maybe once he explains just why the engine and gearbox had to come out, he'll be even MORE negotiable still...:fencelook: As for the gearbox being stolen...thats a pretty specific item to have on ones "shopping" list...

Yep, bumpers off for repair is one thing, but engine and gearbox out in the first place...

Finding a gearbox for this car, let alone the cost, is going to be a task and a half I would think!!! :fencelook:

Maybe it is in an e34 540i conversion somewhere .....

I wonder if the e34 and e39 540i manuals used the same box.....Shame I could never take the six speed box out of the e34 !!!

As per my post above ....I smell a rat .....The seller is negotiable but why was everything stripped in the first place ?

Well , hope the new owner comes right

"4.0L auto" Bull-kaka.... Doesnt even know his own car (E39) specs, so how the heck would he know it's real value?

I love it the way he keeps going on about "spotless" I want some of those specs he's wearing.

Rick , what I find funny he said the motor was uncovered to take pics but look where it is kept ...
Pity I am so far ....but then he may have got upset when all the faults were pointed out and he was offered R15K or so :roflol:
This would be nice for someone in Gauteng ....Gizmo !! ....

The thing is, in my inexperienced mind, being covered up but left outside like this is nowhere near good enough, things can still very easily find their way into the engine, plus I am sure the elements too, so weathering etc. He needs to be very realistic with this - the condition of the car (as a shell) is less important than the condition of the engine now, and then you still need a gearbox! And it's not like you can exactly take the car for a test drive to check other things out! :nonono:

Philip what is strange that the guy thinks the car is valuable but lets the engine lie around outside . it is a shame to let this manual go to waste . For a 98 model it may go for R90K or so if in reasonable condition .
If someone had a 6-speed box and looked at the car ( and any service history !! ) it may be better inside than we think . Maybe then R35K would do it ....any a lot of work if small items need attention .....those are the ones that add up ....

Well, if I had the know how and the extra money I would be tempted to restore a car like this, it is pretty rare and therefore valuable, but not so much when it is in 'kit-form' with vital parts missing! Yep, an engine like that would rather be stored in my house than outside with some flimsy plastic covering it!

I definitely think it is still worth looking at - but now one needs to also ask, why does this guy then not fix it up himself in the first place?!

Philip ...
I am sure with the R130K spent on these two .....you may as well have bought the e39 M5 in Alberton for R160K ..
