E39 540i (4.4l V8) - Engine wanted

Looking for a second hand engine for my E39 540i (4.4l V8). Have already contacted numerous suppliers (bmwpower.co.za;engines4africa etc.). Either they don't have or they are ridiculously priced. Anyone who knows of a possible engine please help.

What happened to the original?

It is still running but it has a bearing knock/piston slap. Nobody can actually confirm without opening it up.

They're not to expensive to rebuild, but if you have to go for another engine then try and find one that's still in a car. Hopefully they can start it and you can at least listen for anything obvious.

Take a video so we can hear the noise.

Thanks for the advice. Thus far I received two quotes from guys with a good reputation for BMW engine overhauling. both came out at R45'. It seems a bit rough to spend more than half the value of the car to fix it doesn't it?

The noise can not be heard when idling. Only when you accelerate you hear the knocking/slapping sound. . . so it would be very difficult to record properly.

I love your car! Can't see a pic but i love those old 540's! I had a 1995 540i auto, it was my favourite car of all! I loved the engine sound more than anything! Wrote it off in a thunderstorm unfortunately. . . .what a car!

Thanks. I love the car, but not so much the fuel bill
Fantastic on open the road though. 4 people + luggage and the car just asks for more.

So it only makes the noise when the car is moving? Even when just revving it's quite??

I used to think of excuses to drive long distance/open road with my 540! The car is in it's element on the open road. . .

Im not sure if the noise occurs when revving. I'll have to check. . .

So the OP (Christoff aka mcvn) which is a friend of mine, still haven't been able to get his 540 back running.

Today he sent me this, I seems like finally at least the problem has been identified:

"The sleeve of one piston is damaged. Suspect a ‘nut’ got through the intake manifold and damaged the sleeve and piston. I have to 're-sleeve' the sleeve and replace the piston. Or I have to buy another engine somewhere, but I'm not sure since you never know what you are going to get with a second hand engine. Or I need to get another block, just the engine block itself, where the sleeves are still fine. Not really sure where to start, could you asked on the BMWFanatics forum for me?"

Any advice to give?

I got a 98 model 740i being stripped, just not to sure if the engine is the 4.0 or 4.4lt. Will confirm on vin.
