thanks guys,

we should get LZ to tell us a bit about his E60 experience as well.

Another thing, the dreaded TURBO FAILURE. how likely is it to happen and how is it best avoided? in case it does occur, how much would we be looking at to have it replaced/repaired? consider that I will do most of the DIYs (70/100).

The leaf that I hear Diesel guys lamenting about, does it also grow on this particular engine? this is assuming that I get the newer motor. I know that they have them on the earlier version.

Turbo failure can happen... And it is a risk you take when buying a used diesel... However. Turbos will last a long long time if you look after them... Regular oil and filter changes... Don't push the car until it's up to temp... Idle before shutting down and so on...

BMW did redesign the swirl flap and they are less prone to failure in the newer engines... Still no harm in removing them though

A turbo for these cars can be bought at Turbo Exchange in Jhb for around 10k

I hope I can get a R10k bargain back and buy the spare turbo with the car, :rollsmile:

Am loving the 530D series more and more.

The sellers of these car will be surprised as to the amount of wisdom that will be oozing from this bloke when I start viewing them. hahahaha......

If swirl flaps are present, remove them. No question asked.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll dig up a few DIYs in here on how to do that.


...and from one of LZ's posts (click here) I found out that the Japs have R4K turbos. I don't know how reliable but ... yeah, they are out there.

The swirl flap procedure is not too difficult, but can be messed up if you don't have help from someone. I removed mine with the help of some very good friends and Fanatics. Can be tricky in some places as it's not a straight forward procedure.

The blanking plates needed to replace the swirl flaps with can be ordered from eBay as I did. Very good quality and not expensive. You will not find those things here in SA.

These blanking plates, are they standard or one fits all. maybe I could pre order them after I have decided on the car.

....and the same old question, price? I wont have much room for financial flexibility and hence that repetitive Q. I wont be able to do much on the car for about two months after its purchase due to finances. budget for m/v cannot overrun other house hold budgets according to my wife's laws.:rollsmile:

I have both, The 2001 E39 530d Auto with 271000kms and the 2006 E60 530d Auto with 64000kms.

The E60 does NOT compare to the E39 when it somes to comfort and suspension.

Niggly bits about the E60 that I dislike:- iDrive Freeze, ECU override of gear changes (supposedly for a smoother change), fiddly electronics, not being able to switch the radio off completely, ultra lightweight panels, silly spacesaver wheel(which does not fit my car - I have the M5 disc and wheel setup), lack of a temperature gauge proper and the most irritating is the seatbelt warning gong.

Although my E60 has M57D30TU2 coupled to a 6 speed Auto, I tend to get better consumption from my E39 on mixed driving.

The E39 power/torque delivery is its downside, when compared to the E60 - The power and torque rush is phenomenal.

For rapid motoring on freeways with exceptional open road economy, I'd use the E60. For daily driving of both highway/city, I'd use my E39. The only downside of this are the pr!cks that do not know how to open a door without denting the car next to them.

In 271 000kms, I have fitted 3 Turbos, 1 waterpump, 2 belt sets, 1 set of coolant hoses - ZERO gearbox issues (just a stiff link cable), 1 set of shocks (front and rear), 5 sets of tyres, 1 windscreen, 2 window mechs (LR and RF), 1 set of Angel eye globes, 1 set of injectors, 1 set of rail pressure sensors, 1 x Airflow Meter, 1 x Pre Feed Fuel Pump

I am not even going to go down the road of the E60................:bangdesk:

Probably a highway queen :tease:.

Ours only lasted about 130 000kms, but its daily route was between george and knysna and as you know chef that is up and down up and down. So the constant gearing down on the box and putting high torque through the box. Didn't go well for them.

That's why I switch to manual as soon as I encounter hills. Stick to one gear.
