E39 530d vs E60 530d

If you're really keen on the E39, go for it.

As I said it's a head vs heart decision. I went from a newer E90 330d to an older E46 M3 - yes, the E46 is older, yes the M3 is going to cost more to maintain, but at the end of the day, if you really want something - take the plunge and go for it. Our choice in cars is seldom a rationale decision.

The way I think of it, is that some people smoke their money away, some drink it away, some of us blow it on maintaining older cars - choose your poison and enjoy

Question I post is this...

Do you really want the diesel, or would you concidder a 530i??

Also, what is the highest price you willing to pay??

+1 E39 530i would be a much better option if you really want an E39, less trouble-some and much more powerful than the 530d

Hi guys, as you can see I'm new here but just want to throw in my 2c.
I've recently bought a 2008 530d and so far I'm rather pleased with it. I did test drove a e39 a while back and found it great but I preferred the e60.

Didn't the E39 have the cr@p GM auto boxes and the E60 the the much better ZF boxes too?

I think that you are correct here. I had a 2006 E60 530d mpack with the 150/160kw motor and a zf box. I "drove" the car - not abuse as such, often using the steptronic but never had issues at all with swirl flaps or gearbox and the car did about 70 laps of Kyalami at full tilt! unfortunately had to let the car go due to financial issues but would still be driving it today if I could of - was a fabulous car, had 116k kms when it went and its been seen a couple of time since. Also had the e39 in 528i and M5 guises but not the D. They are built really tough - like highly agile tanks more so than the e60's.

hallo Armstrong, ChefDj, Graan, Spawn, MSM and the rest of the 5ver guys.

I'd hate to start a new thread whilst there is a perfectly good one here.

Am considering an E60, definitely an E60. my concern is that I wouldn't know what to choose between 530D, 530i,528i or a 525/523.

From your personal experiences with those handsome oil burners of yours, how does diesel compare to petrol cars? not the power and torque text book stuff but real drivability. doesn't the smoke at take-off bother? service intervals and prices ( remember that I have to service other cars as well)? Longevity or lifespan between the two? Just anything I might have to consider before I make that decision.

Am looking into buying cash R100,000 or less for a fairly good e60 around April or early May ( been saving like a Tortoise).I love 'ol faithful' (e46 323i) and I wont be selling him.

Thanks.

Howzit bud,

I'm into my 3rd week of 530d ownership now and loving her to bits! I'd say 530d is the way to go, they have the best mix of power and economy that you're going to get!

Mine barely smokes, I only get smoke if I accelerate hard then there is smoke... Smoke coming from a BMW Diesel means its going fast

I have yet to service it so cant really comment on it there... Oil Services are every 15 000 I think... I'll be doing oil changes every 7000-7500kms... Clean oil is never a bad thing especially when it comes to lubrication of the turbo

E60's have the M57 engine which in my opinion is legendary!

Take Chef's for example, over 250 000km's... P1000, I think his is over 300 000 now! Not to mention Dieselfan's 330d at over 400 000 :praise:

I have nothing but praise for these vehicles... Especially the E39 but I'm just biased.

For under 100k, there aren't many E60's with the bigger engines. For that price you may find a couple of 523i's which in my opinion is seriously underpowered for the weight and size of the car. Do not go less than 3.0 liter on a 5 series.

I would agree with Rob and say get a diesel if you can. If you can't afford an E60 530d, then go back and get E39. I imagine service costs are around the same, except the E60 has a lot more electronics to go wrong than the E39 has.

Smoke is fun
But the car only smokes if you put your foot down.

The way fuel prices are going, it would be ludicrous to choose a 3.0 liter petrol over a 3.0 liter diesel, when driving distance can be 1.5 times as much on the same amount of fuel with the diesel.

A standard service on my car: around R2000 to R2300 for parts (from mixed suppliers)

Engine oil (engine takes 7.5 liters so I buy 10)
Air filter
Oil filter
Diesel filter
Cabin filter x 2

As far as longevity, I don't know of any E60's with high mileage and still going strong. I'm not saying there aren't. There are plenty of high mileage E39's still pulling as they should. I've seen more broken bits inside E60's than I have in E39's (ie interior plastics and mechanisms).

I am also biased towards the E39, but for reason. The E39, E46 and E53 (X5) were the best BMW's ever built in terms of quality

Chef just raised a point thats worth chewing on...

I picked my 530d up in Bloemfontein which is roughly 600km away from here... I went with my dad, he drives an E240 (2.6l V6)

On the return journey the diesel BMW used 2.5L/100km less than the Mercedes. Thats a good 15 liters of fuel which at R14/l is over R200... In the long run you're saving

Hi There,
If you are set on an E60 I would go 530d and preferably with the Msport pack, just gives the car a better look all together. I can vouch that I had no issues with maintenance problems with this car, albeit I only got to 116k kms with it. Between the "530I" and the "d", having driven both, the d is an easier car to drive because of the extra torque and almost as much power, but you can really tootle or go like the clappers. the "I" seems way more lethargic. Fuel consumption is hugely impressive with the d, long open roads at 120/130 it would drop to 5.9l/100km! mixed town driving it would be around the 9.8/10.2l/100km. The petrol is a lot higher. I would be cautious though with cars around the R100k mark, they will be fairly older versions and definitely not sport pack config.
Hope my 2c worth helps

Thanks guys, at least am getting an idea of how things work out for the 5series. go bigger or go home. That's why diesels are recommended as they have the kick at a more friendly price. The bigger body needs a bigger motor.

The other thing is the specs. looks like I'll have a very limited choice on that.

trim should at least be Msports pack.

The way fuel prices are going, it would be ludicrous to choose a 3.0 liter petrol over a 3.0 liter diesel, when driving distance can be 1.5 times as much on the same amount of fuel with the diesel.

ChefDJ, economy is a big +. looking at the way things are going we need to spare a buck here and there if possible. :=):

Mine barely smokes, I only get smoke if I accelerate hard then there is smoke... Smoke coming from a BMW Diesel means its going fast

hahahaha...., that's a new one.

This is a very big plus. Its encouraging to meet high milage cars (e39). :praise:

The newer Engine M57 means that the tech was improved (e60?).

I would be cautious though with cars around the R100k mark, they will be fairly older versions and definitely not sport pack config.

come to think of it, this is very true, to get a sports pack for this amount would be a miracle.

The facelifts would be better as teething problems would have been eradicated.

As far as longevity, I don't know of any E60's with high mileage and still going strong.

for this point, is there anyone with a high mileage E60 on this forum? I think I will check the mileage in the 5 series register as well.
