E39 530d Diesel Leak

Thread revival.

This morning on startup and idle a friend pointed out my car was leaking something. Upon closer inspection we discovered what we thought was a pool of water was actually diesel.

With the car still idling I got down to check where the diesel was coming from, but it looked like it was coming from higher up in the engine bay. I could see a massive leak dripping. I opened the bonnet and had a look, and I'm not too sure where the leak is coming from.

I'm going to strip the covers soon to see as it may possibly be these pipes spoken of in the original post.

It might also be an injector, as far as I've read.

Any advice???

I should add that it was only leaking when idling at home. I did a 2km trip to work, and when I got to work I left the car idling and got out to check. It wasn't leaking anymore.

Yes, you sure have a leak there, check the pipes as well as the high pressure pump, mine leaked there as well, had to refurbish the pump at Diesel Tech bosch agents.
hope you get the problem sorted quick.
By the way, my daily ride the 330d E90 manual now has 247000 on the odo, without any major problems, this is the best BMW I have ever owned! Period!.

What margin of cost was a pump refurb?

Right, the leak is back.

This time it did not stop leaking when I got to work, and so I need to get this sorted ASAP. It seems to be coming from below the two pipes, and not AT the two pipes that are mentioned in the first post of this thread. I believe the high pressure pump is there, but I stand to be corrected.

That pump from G-Drive, Bosch brand, is over 11k.

I want to know if it could just be a seal that needs replacing, or a washer or something. I cannot see exactly where it's leaking as the oil filter housing is in the way, as well as some cooling pipes. I do not think I should be the one stripping that area as I really won't know what I'm doing.

Any advice from the gurus out there before I decide to take the car in for stripping and repairs?

she also cuts out/DDE at just over 1/2 tank for no reason, after initially only cutting out at around 1/4 tank. had tank pump replaced but got worse. :ty:

fuel system is weak. just like the coolant system. lol but still love her.

Hey!! I hope we have the same problem!! I have a 2000 E39 530D. With about 220k it ran great as long as I kept it above 1/4 tank. It ran like that till about 250k then the pump under the driver seat went bad,RHD, replaced the pump and ran great. This pump was a little louder and I could hear air in the system. This was a clue to why the pump went bad and I can't use the whole tank of fuel. While driving on the new pump I ordered a new in tank pump, in tank cross over tube, both fuel level sensors, the blue plastic tube that runs on the outside of the tank, the plastic distribution piece near the pump under the car and every part that was available under the hood. With all that changed, the problem got worse, to the point i only use 1/4 tank before refueling... Still got 150miles/ 1/4 tank Best car ever!!! The pump under the car went bad again, Replaced again at 275k, waiting for the real problem to show itself.

298k Stopped running and started leaking out of the diesel pump near the engine. I'm going to pull the pump, 1) look into a seal kit,2) have it rebuilt, if possible, or worst case, replace it. I have the intake off, I'm replacing vacuum lines and coolant hoses while I'm in there. My parts are a 2 weeks away :-( I'll let you know what happens.

PS. I read a post where someone said he knew for sure that it was the in tank pump not being seated correctly. I swear mine is seated but I'm going to check anyway.

If anyone has any hints or info on replacing the diesel pump, please message me.

Hi guys,

Sorry for reviving this old thread. Did you guys manage to get this problem solved? I seem to be having the same problem. My leak seems to be coming from sensor number 2 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=ED92-EUR---E46-BMW-330d&diagId=13_1025. The diesel flows onto the side on the engine block and onto the ground. As said by someone, my leak is quite bad in the morning when the car is idling but when i drive for about 5kms or so the leak stops. Yesterday i jet washed the engine and discovered the 8mm screws on top of injector 5 and 6 were not tightened and there was diesel leaking from that side as well. The leak had been there for sometime and for some reason i never noticed it until it bunny-chowed my control arm bushes. So i then used thread tape on injector 5 & 6 and it was solved. I also replaced the feed line hose and clamps on item Number 1 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=ED92-EUR---E46-BMW-330d&diagId=13_1025 because that side was leaking as well but now it looking like the diesel is now coming out of the fuel temperature sensor. i could be wrong but this is really driving me nuts. There seems to be nothing coming from the HPFP area and its dry. Could the sensor be the problem or are there any seals in the sensor that might have given up? :smashScreen::smashScreen:

Thanks in advance.
