I have just replaced, some feed and return pipes on my 530d, I am sure that
other oilburners with around 200k kms should check theirs as well , the pipes
in time get vrot from the heat exposure and start to crack.
Here is a picture of the feed and return pipe connections that must be checked.

Thread revival.

This morning on startup and idle a friend pointed out my car was leaking something. Upon closer inspection we discovered what we thought was a pool of water was actually diesel.

With the car still idling I got down to check where the diesel was coming from, but it looked like it was coming from higher up in the engine bay. I could see a massive leak dripping. I opened the bonnet and had a look, and I'm not too sure where the leak is coming from.

I'm going to strip the covers soon to see as it may possibly be these pipes spoken of in the original post.

It might also be an injector, as far as I've read.

Any advice???

I should add that it was only leaking when idling at home. I did a 2km trip to work, and when I got to work I left the car idling and got out to check. It wasn't leaking anymore.

The thing is, the engine is still cold by the time I get to work. Could it build up enough pressure/heat to be able to stop leaking? It was suggested that a loose pipe expanding may then seal itself and stop the leak?

I have sent a PM to the OP as well asking for advice.

I think I'll let the car cool down completely again before I strip and start it again, for in case it really is the pressure or heat causing the leak to stop.

If I do spot the leak, I'll take it for a drive and come back and leave it to idle a few minutes to see if it carries on leaking when idling but not when driving.

I'll then switch off, leave it for half an hour and start it again and let it idle to see if the leak starts again.

It does not leak when off at all.

No leaking around the fuel filter area?

Does the car start fine and perform fine?

Starts and performs fine.

Fuel filter is 100%. No leaking there.

Okay from what I've read if its starting fine and performing fine then atleast its not around your HPFP...

My Golf had a leak around the filter hence my asking

LoL calm down. Firstly it's not an injector :) If it was then the car would really not be idling or running well.

Next I think if it was a fuel line/hose then with it being perished and old it will be more prone to leak through the cracks when cold. As it heats and expands it seals again. This is speculation though.

Like you said, take the cover off and have a look with the car idling. I'm sure it's nothing major

+1

at average 1000bar + you wont think maybe a high pressure connection or injector is leaking, you will KNOW its leaking..
