Howdy all,

Just trying to get a feel for how an e39 525i compares performance wise against the 530i and 530d. If anyone has had the opportunity of owning / driving both or all 3 please give your opinions. Obviously I know the d will have more torque etc and consequently will seem better in moving its weight about. I have had the 528 & 530i but I for the life of me cant recall the power being vastly different. Having had the M5 version its in a different league, but I noticed a healthy difference in the e60 version of 530i vs 530d - the diesel was much better than the "I" version. So I am concerned that a 525i will feel under-powered for the size of the car. I am not a "Hamilton" as such but do like to get past cars when I want and don't expect to have a cup of tea whilst doing so .....

530i was the best of the lot in the 6cyl models..........

525i is fine, not sluggish at all, but look for a 530i, you'll smile a lot more :=):

530d is nice but in the E39 the 530i was superior, much more powerful as well

In light of the above if you find a mint E39 face-lift, be it a 525i,530i/d, grab it, clean ones are fast becoming rare........

Tah, appreciated. Like I mentioned the e60 the diesel was awesome in al facets - power/speed and economy.
Never drove a diesel e39 though. I have an opportunity on a e39 d and 525i both with msport pack and both in great condition.

ok firstly. i think im more than qualified to answer this, i owned a MANUAL 525I 2001 for almost 5yrs. im now onto a 2001 530d.

overall the 530d will eat the 530i. the 530i *MIGHT* be marginally quicker robot to robot. say upto 80/90km/hr...

the 530d is particularly nice between 120-180km/hr. it gets from e.g 130/140 to 180km nice n quick. the low end torque is just something else.
410nm.

if overall consumption and overall cost of ownership is no issue, then m5.
perhaps 540i as a "i cant afford a m5 and ill settle for less"...

but overall the 530d is possibly the best e39 overall... also no matter what you do, your realworld fuel consumption is never less that 11.x km per liter. if you drive normal you'll be good for 12,13,14km per liter. or around 7litre/100km.

as low as 6.xliter per 100 on the long haul

and the 530d's are capable of HUUUUGE Mileage...

only expensive items being auto box on the auto car, turbo and injectors.

a small tidbit of info, pre-1999 cars use diesel injectors that cost around 6k each. from 2000 on the manual cars and from 2001 on the auto cars they use an injector that costs around 3k each. (x 6)

the turbo can be reconned for around 6k afaik.
