E36 Window Issues

HI Guys

So yesterday my window stops working again. Its been an issue since i bought it, as the fuse keeps on blowing every 3-4 months.

Ive taken it to an auto elec who stated that its very hard to trace the fault once its working again. Ive suggested putting in the blown fuse and testing it but he said it still can not be traced.

In may a new issue creeped up after i changed the fuse, the window would go down but not up and once the door is closed it goes up a bit as its supposed to for a pillar-less ( could be called something else )door

I got the window motor refurbished, i was told the mechanism was still good, got another 2nd hand switch and it started working again. Hopefully next week a new door latch with window switch should arrive.

Yesterday my fuse blew again and after replacing it im stuck with a half open window.

Im not sure if the door latch is going to fix my problem.

Anyone had a similar issue, can suggest the cause of the fault and can recommend some one to go too?

I had similar problems on my E36-325i

It turned out to be a dry joint on the relay, the relay is situated on a Bus-Bar located behind the passenger side cubby-hole.

Take relay out, soldering iron, and re-touch on all the contact point, problem solved, or buy a new relay.

the biggest part of the job is disassemble of cubby hole and replacement

Thanks I try that this weekend

Would the relay be situated there as my fuse box is under the hood?

Yip, in your car relays in fuse box under the hood.

My guess would have been the window switch, but you changed that already.

I disagree

The relays under the bonnet does not include the window mechanism relay, I also thought so, until I bought the Haynes Manual, and discovered another hidden location inside the car, behind the passenger side glove-box.

This is the fuse box under the hood, but none for the window

Stipped out the cubby

found a few relays on the right but none for the window

Managed to trace the clicking noise that is made every time i lower the window to here

Seems like this is the relay but im unsure, can these be replaced or does the whole board needs to be replaced? Is there a way to troubleshoot to check if the board is in fact faulty?

Are there any relays under the steering column?

The board

sound is coming from one of those 3 siemens black relays

anyone knows what board that is and if the relays can be changed or the entire board?

its been a while, since I had my E36, so I am not sure if these relays can be changed, but I can recall using a soldering iron and going over all the pin-points of all the relays where they connect into the PC-Board, as this is where there was a "dry-joint" or a broken joint.....thats what solved the problem on my E36

will try that

wonder what a new / 2nd hand board will cost of it any other model board would fit so i can test if that's the issue

So I've changed the door latch as well and still the same issue.
The window fuse still blows every other month.

Can anyone recommend a good auto elec?

Are the fuse and relays suppose to get hot? When i was changing the fuse i rested my hands on the other fuses & relays and noticed they were pretty hot

Yeah mine started out the same until it jammed completely, motor only went down not up. if changed everything now and can only think its the wiring.

seems to be a common issue with the window, central locking system and electrical items

I havent had the problem that it stops opening or closing.

Mine does how ever if the car has been standing in the sun a while that the front passanger window just doesnt open until it decides it cold enough again.

I have unfortunatly have had another type of problem with it when the witch broke, the window opens and closes but only about an inch at a time so you continuesly need to press and release the button to get it open.
