E36 vs E46 question

Hey hey

So I was wonder, if one had R60 000 odd to spend, would you rather go for a E36 328i with 130 000km, or a E46 320i with 190 000km (similar spec, ito sunroof, mags, climate control etc)?

Any particular reason for your choice? I know many people prefer the direct driving feel of the E36 - and the E46 seems like a more comfortable drive (perhaps less reliable?)...

I'm plotting an upgrade ;)

both are great it would really depend on the overall condition of the car... also you could probably find an e46 323i for a similar price

maintenance... both are about the same

Both are good cars... the e36 obviously with alot more grunt looking at the two models you are considering.

The e46 would be more spacious and having owned both, i found the build quality of the e46 better (not to say the e36 was bad).

In the end... it depends on what you need from the car

After owning a total of 9 e46/e36 6 cylinders, I can say the following:

The e36 328i is in a league of its own in terms of Bang for the buck. It is definitely the more direct and engaging drive, although it depends on what you are looking for from the car. The e36 328i is still as thrilling as ever, even by todays performance standards. The e46 is ahead in terms of technology, looks (subjective), luxury feel and more importantly, safety. In terms off handling, you cant really say one is better than the other. the e46 has more user friendly handling, where the grip/handling reserves are closer to the surface while the e36 is more driver orientated, it can amaze you and make your heart skip a beat at the same time. In terms of reliabilty it depends on the previous maintenance history, although IMHO the e36 is more robust and durable than the e46, and will require quite abit less $$$ to keep in good shape.

You dont make mention if the e46 is a m52TU (2.0l) or m54 (2.2) variant. There is a massive difference between the two. The m52 (generally pre facelift) is abit weak and not really worth considering in this regard. The m54 2.2 is a whole different ball game. Unbelievable amount of grunt when you consider its the second smallest engine in the range. Both the e46 2.2 that I had have also been the lightest on fuel from all the 6 cylinders that I have owned (2 x e46 330i, 1x e46 325i, 4x e36 328i and 1 x e36 325i). My current 320i is returning 8.5l - 9l/100km on the mixed cycle.

It honestly depends on what you require from the car. Both have their pros and cons. But as I said, if this e46 is the 320i 2.0l pre facelift, then its e36 328i hands down.

The e46 320i 2.2l is extremely impressive for what it is, and is easily one of the most refined 6 cylinders ever. I prefer the engine character of the e46 320i m54 to the e46 325i to be honest.

I was in the same situation as you, and ultimately went with the e46 320i m54 for a few reasons...

I picked up my 01 330i for 60k! After strong haggling and negotiations ofcourse. When I was looking to buy a car, I was looking at e36 328i's, E46 325i's and a couple E46 320i's. Having test driven all of them, the E46 330i is in a league of its own. With just over 250k Kms on the clock, it is still running strong as ever and returning 9.7 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, in mostly city traffic and up here in Gauteng!

The car never ceases to amaze me and I can honestly say that I am a happier person for having the privilege to own and experience one.

I'd personally go for the E36, only because of the engine. It's a far more engaging drive, but, if being used as a daily the E46 is more suitable IMO.

You didn't say what you will use it for, daily driver or weekend toy. E46 is the better daily driver but don't look at the 320i as you will be disappointed, has to be 325i and up.
If the car is a weekend toy then the E36 328i will be perfect as you can mod them easier and there are more mods available for them.

LPM when did you buy a 320i

If its going to be your daily ride, go for an e46...

Hey Doomsdaya, long time. How you've been bro?

I just picked this one up a few weeks ago. I was originally looking for another e46 330i after I sold my 330i Motorsport, but this 320i came along at a great price and I couldnt say no, especially after the test drive.
