E36: Steering Wheel Replacement

Hi Guys,

I want to replace the steering wheel in my E36. The wheel is currently in a state that is not feasible to repair. The rubber around the steering, mostly at the top is brittle and now breaking apart due to the wear and tear. It is 20 years old.

So my questions is which steering wheel from a later model BMW is simply interchangeable?

I dont want to go through the process of modifying things to fit. I just want the current one removed and a new one fitted. (Unless i really have to)

Any suggestions/advise/ideas?

TIA

I've fitted a f30 sport steering in a e36 and there was a lot of work for it to fit .The only straight fit upgrade will be 36 m3 4 door steering.

Hi, I have a Ci steering wheel, you can have it for free if you need a temporary solution. it is not in great nick and does not have the Airbag. Let me know if you want it.

what about the airbag connection?

Arbee, I have a spare E36 wheel that was partially covered. You will only need to get it properly covered again (the current job was a little hack and slash), besides that the wheel is good. No airbag though. Drop me a PM if you're interested

You will need to use the same steering wheel the car currently has as the airbag and slip-ring don't bolt up to any other BMW steering wheel.

I have a decent condition e36 steering wheel (same as yours) and the leather is still in great shape. Will just require you to swap it over.

So a wheel from an E36 M3 wont fit? :blueCry:

I have this wheel spare if it's something you might be interested in. You will have to source airbag and I have no idea regarding wiring and slip ring. Gizmo might be able to chime in and assist if it's of interest to you...? It was a straight swap on the M Coupe. It's an original refurbed wheel (alcantara) that I bought from Germany and was on the car for less than a week.

Oh my... That looks so good. Looks expensive too.

I have managed to source a stock E36 wheel. But, for interest, if it does fit, Gizmo, how much would i need to spend on the airbag and installation?

Thanks to Gizmo for organizing a correct steering wheel and fitting it on short notice. Plus new badges... WIN!!!
