What speed are e36 328i speedometers marked to ? I am looking for a 328i ( or 540i ) for about R40K cash and see speedos marked 260 as on my 325i and 240 as in some road tests . Which is correct , or were both used ?

Just to add, the older ones were marked to '260km/h'.
The never ones were marked to '240km/h', with an extra marker after it (for 250km/h).

I have a 96 model that is marked to 240km/h. The older e36's (95 and below) have the older clusters that are marked to 260km/h. Also on the older clusters, the fuel gauge indicates number of litres, while the newer ones just have strokes.

I think those that got the old clusters also got the old aircon units whereas the newer models came with climate control.

IMHO there are differences in speedo cluster , climate control , rear brake light in window and door panels and seems difficult to tie them up to dates in production . Have been looking for e36 328i so am trying to sort this lot out , may help where year of manufacture is uncertain

I noticed differences in:

Seats: Older models (Pre xx/94) have front seats that have the thin backrests, newer models have the thicker backrests, i feel it more comfortable.

Climate control: Pre 96 models have the manual climate control with the knobs.

Remote central locking: Older models (Pre 95) have a normal looking key with a torch. You cannot remotely lock the car.

The speedo cluster as discussed

The 3rd brake light on the rear shelf. Older models dont have this.

Front bumpers. The pre 97 models have front bumpers that have many slots in the airdam, while the newer models have 1 big rectangle.

I also understand there are more differences in the late 97/98 models.
