E36 Relay numbers?

Hi guys,

Just wondering.. those little numbers on the relays inside your fuse box...



what do they mean? I'm assuming each relay position has to have a relay with a specific number, but how do you know which goes where?

I have a service manual, but it does not contain this information (or I just can't seem to find it).

It's a 1998 316i. The car had been to a panel beater, but after it had been standing there for several months and his "business" fell apart, we had to bring it home.. only problem was that it would not start. I was told to check the fuel pump relay. Ironically, our other 1997 316i had the exact same problem a few days ago, and I managed to fix it today by swapping the fuel pump relay with another one that had the same number on it.

But I noticed the two cars have different numbered relays. I suspect someone had swapped out parts from my car with old broken ones. So I would like to find out what the numbers mean and try to get hold of new ones if I have to.
