Basically I`m looking at the options. The car needs a paintjob etc., interior fixed, suspension / undercarriage fixed, engine swop etc.

Are there anyone in Cape area doing this type of projects?

This is the car as it looked maybe 4 years ago.

I have something like this in mind. My wheels can stay.

seems like you have some budget...any particular reason you want to do it? sentimental value? Would you not sell and buy another?

I like the car. Don't think I will get much for it. It has 303000km on the clock. My reasoning is if I spend e.g 50k on the car then she's as good as new and I know what I'm driving.

The only one stop shop in Cape Town I can recall is AutoMC, perhaps call them?

@AutoMC is the member name on the forum. Hope this helps.

You want to turn it from a 4 door to a 2 door?!

Haha, but in all seriousness, I suspect if the car needs a paintjob, engine swap and other miscellaneous work, 50k is an optimistic budget...

What does the car look like currently?

Personally I would start with the mechanical side of things.

A good re spray can cost you 20 to 30k, and then all you have is some sparkly paint. Leaving you with peanuts to take care of the engine etc.

Hi Buddy,

if I was you I would do the following as restorining cars are not cheap and you gonna struggle to get all that done for 50k especially if you take it to someone to do it for you.

Take it from me I bought a 1 series V8 and its a money pit lol but I am getting there slowly and I find it quite rewarding especially since I am doing majority of the work.

If I was you sell the car, add it to the 50k pot and you can then look for a jem of a car which would be quite pricey.

But if you really keen on that car I say go for it and best of luck, keep us updated

Yes after some research and much thinking, I`m considering to rather get a replacement. What puts me off is that then I would have no idea of what shape the new car is in e.g. mechanics, suspension etc...

personally i won't take on a project like this unless its a special model or really sentimental otherwise it doesn't make sense to me...ive done a few projects now & it always costs more than you think..even if you plan like crazy.

I have to think about this long and hard. It seems like it would not be worth-it to re-build an E36. Rather get a new car

Most important is to know that the engine and gearbox is 100%. Hopefully you should be able to feel/hear any problems.

Suspension is usually easy to fix.

There will always be something to replace when buying these cars. Luckily when I bought mine the engine/gearbox were perfect. Just needed some new suspension bits like tierod ends etc.
