e36 rear wheel bearing advice

Hi guys

just a bit of advice needed.

A friend of mine will be changing the rear wheel bearings on his e36 soon. The bearings just started making a noise about +- 500km ago.

What I need to know: do the hubs have to be changed (i.e is it advisable regardless of condtion of the hub, as a preventative measure) or does changing it depend entirely on the condition of the hub when the bearing comes out?

If the Hub is fine and new bearings are put in, will it remain that way or is the hub ''a wearing part'' so to speak.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks guys

Wheel bearing or one of the sideshaft bearings? I did 493 000km on the same rear wheel bearings, changed the right driveshaft once because it was shot, quite a mission to remove, might be best to get a pro to change it, the inside is easy, but removing the shaft from the wheel side takes some doing....

the hub is re-usable and not a wearing part. the diagrams a1exander refers to in diagram 1 shows the trailing arm with integral hub carier, and diagram 2 shows the bearing and drive flange / hub as a1exander says with the right tools easy to do.

After going for +- 500 km's with a wheel bearing making a noise, you will definitely need to replace the hub.

I've replaced both my rear bearings about a month ago when I bought my E36, and both hubs had to be replaced.

If your mate knows he's thing, then he will definitely see the problem on the hub.

Hope this helps if you've not done the job yet.
