E36 Maintainance

Howzit Gents,

This goes out to all the E36 owners, i have 4 questions

1) Shocks, i have read the forum and i see Koni and Bilstein are the selected shocks for these cars. Where would be the best place to get them fitted? By best place i mean price and working standard

2) General services, where would in JHB would be the best place to service them? Stealers are asking crazy money.

3) Gearbox, are the gearboxes on these cars suppose to be tight?

4) Clutch, where should a good clutch feed? Lower higher???

Thanks, took the car to Tunetech. Needs a new clutch and the shocks are def shot.

New clutch fitted 6.5k. Good price?

In all honesty, the 6.5k sounds very close to the agent prices...

firstly, what clutch is he fitting to your car?

secondly, when i did the clutch on my car a few years back, i bought an original clutch from sachs and then had my mechanic fit it for me, the dealers wanted R6k to replace and fit and it cost me R4500 at the time...

my advice is to do a little bit more homework and you might be able to save some cash.

With regards to your shocks, i would suggest replacing the shock mounts at the same time, your car will love you for it

the gearbox being tight can mean that one of the syncromesh's are worn/damaged and you can possibly look into replacing the gear shift linkage

Thanks for the info bud, will look into that route.

Will get pricing on a SACHS clutch and check fitment prices all round.

Shock mounts it is then, the bumps and knocking sounds when driving are driving me crazy

With the clutch I'd say that since u know the clutch is on its way out won't it make the gears feel tight? 6500 for a new clutch fitted is too over priced. When I did mine the clutch cost 2000 for star brake and clutch and the labour was 1800 to remove the box and refit. Also bare in mine that you need a professional to do the job as it's not straight forward because when you take out the box if not done right the engine could lean back and crack the heat vavle

Follow the instructions in determining which parts you're looking for.

6.5k for the clutch and fitment is a fair price... if it is just for the clutch excluding fitting its a bit pricey

Still on the original shocks since new, car has done 237k.

From the service history only things replaced in terms of suspension and braking is discs and pads at 195k. Nothing else.

Why i think the shocks are the culprit is because on my E30 i had the same issues. Replaced shocks and bob's your uncle all good again.

Anything i need to look at from the experience of my fellow M drivers?

Look into getting yourself a rogue engineering brace kit for the rear shock towers

Shocks should be changed between 2 & 4years....

if my memory serves me correct and your car is a 4door, you should look at either having the cat's removed or gutted because they tend to get clogged over time

How will removing the CAT affect petrol consumption, the car is a daily driver so don't want any more petrol usage :nonono:

While you busy with the shocks, might as well check your front control arm bushes, your rear trailing arm bushes, your tie rod ends and get them all sorted.

Moranor should be able to sort you out with what you need. (They sell awesome shit!)

Check your belts and pulleys for wear also, as well as the power steering pump for leakage or excessive noice.

Also about the clutch, take note if your car shudders on de-pressing the clutch, could be flywheel as well.
