Hi guys im new to this forum ive been driving a 330ci for the past 5years i just bought an e36 m3 3.0l single vanos i bought the car with a bearing knock:cry: im busy repairing it at the moment its costing me a packet because im using all agent parts. The car came without an oil cooler the previous owner said its been running without one from 2008 i just want to know if i should put one in or leave it out because bmw wants R5200 for the oil cooler and R1400 for each pipe:flyfun:

In which province do u live?

And I would definitely replace the oil cooler, on hot summer days the oil temp is already around 100-110 degrees, maybe thats how it got the bearing knock, what oil was the previous owner running?

Is this a 2 door M?

Cliftons in Cape Town should have oil coolers in good nick.

As for the clutch they are expensive unless you go the ebay route, I think its R7500 or something crazy like that. Try and call goldwagen they stock bmw stuff now.

apologies just saw u said its a 3.0

oil should be Edge 10-60w

Edge 10-60w should be good for high temps so shouldnt have been a problem, around 140-150 degrees
Just make sure its 10-60

When I got my M3 I was told.
castrol edge 10-60w
wait for the oil temp to be 80deg before thrashing it
replace diff oil often enough with proper stuff
never let the oil level go below half on the dip stick.

I never had engine issues.
And these guys have been driving M cars forever.

From what I am told the previous 2 owners followed this as well.

When I sold it, it had 208 000km on the clock and it made 208kw and 320nm stock, except for k+n and the middle boxes on the exhaust are removed. this was at KSD in CT, a reputable dyno.

Get an oil cooler, its really important ...

I got a Sachs clutch(bmw OEM equivalent) from Sachs themselves, cost me R3500, labour was R1500.... So you save your R2k. Sorry I don't have the number or details for you anymore cos i gave my file to the new owner.

I strictly used mobil1 in my car, its not cheap but its quality oil!

Your oil temp get to 150?

I dont know i didnt drive it hard yet i bought car with bearing knock but previous owner has been driving car since 2008 without oil cooler they had it removed :argh: after it picked up a leak on the pipes and blanked it off on the block. He told me the oil temp never went over 110 dont know how much of the above is true because after i stripped engine i found num 5 piston broken num 3 rod ran a bearing crank scoured beyond repair oil pump gone water pump gone. Im replacing everything in the sub even resleeved back to std

Shew that is some damage you got there. Those 3.0l cranks not easy to get, but hopefully you get lucky.

Yep was a mission to get the crank and rods theres lots of guys that have 3.2 spares but the 3.0l very few and those guys that do have spares ask agents prices for them  but i managed to get a good crank and rod for 5gs i sent it to crank engineering in north coast rd he polished and micro'd it for me for 100bucks it looks brand new  auto umlhanga wanted R18500 for a new crank but i bought the rest of the stuff from them as the the ks and ae bearings and mains wasnt fitting properly into the bearing caps and i didnt want to take a chance with that amount of power being thrown around in that crankcase

I also bought a 2007 650ci engine, gearbox and diff last year i wanted to stick it in to an e30 shell but i did the maths and its going to be a tight fit. When i bought the m i thought of sticking it in there but the m3 is an m3 mainly because of its engine and i've already started spending money on the spares for the ms engine what to do :thinker: any ideas guys :argh:
