E36 M3 on auction - what a disaster

So a work mate of mine and I decide to head out to Aucor today to have a look at a few cars as he's looking buying, referbing and re-selling the cars as a small venture.
If you guys are interested in Cape Town, pull in http://www.aucor.com/

We see that an E36 M3 2 door is on auction for tomorrow and since he's driven with me the ///M bug has bitten hard!
Anyway, we rock up and first thing we do is go find the M3. Find it and have a good look around.

First sight, paint is still extremely neat, rims look they've just been refurbed and all the lights are looking 110% - promising so far.
Open the car up, entirely different story. Looks like a different car on the inside.

  • Drivers door panelling hanging by one or two hooks
  • Steering wheel lose and worn
  • Centre console completely broken, wires hanging everywhere
  • Drivers seat doesn't move back, only forwards
  • Gear shifter and knob cracked and hanging by a few pieces
  • All the leather looks like dogs have chewed on it and cracked badly
  • NO handbrake
  • NO rearview mirror
  • And and and....

Could be worse. Spirits not dampened just yet and weighing up options of a possible track car for him we decide to see what the engine is doing. Already we'd checked and no visible oil leaks and things in the engine bay looked generally good.

Cool, grabbed the keys and started the M3 up.
Shocking.

  • Black smoke out the exhaust
  • Little to no oil in the engine
  • No coolant
  • Very rough idle
  • Serious mis-fire through up to 4000rpm (engine still fairly cold)
  • Synchros 1st to 5th seems like they're stuffed
  • 1st gear grinds
  • Clutch extremely heavy with little to no feeling
  • And and and

Now I know this is like a very long "don't buy my car on Gumtree" type post, but I'm absolutely amazed who can take such an iconic car and keep it mint on the outside and have an absolute abomination engine and interior wise. Saddens me :argh::bangdesk:

What's left of this car, it may make a semi-decent donor car.

Been to a couple CPT Aucor auctions, you would be in a massive shock when you hear the prices cars reach there, especially when still vat and commission to be added.

People are completely mad paying full retail and above, especially when they never driven the cars and no refunds.

When i was looking for a car 2 years back went to a couple months worth of auctions and never put in a bid for 1 car as the price rocketed and before you know it at full retail.

But went to burchemores 1 saturday as i was passing through and picked up 2 cars at decent prices.

Good luck with any auction though, as it is pure luck most times

They should give it away :nonono:

Cost to restore will not be economically viable (from the sound of it)..... not that M3 and economical go hand in hand

Mostly lemons these days, we all know how cars are treated before the bank comes to repossess it...

If this was a financed car , then report this to the auctioneer , he can let the car go for R20K and the bank can get the rest from the guy who stuffed it up !!! He will never do that again .:roflol:

Not only auctions....I saw a e36 coupe .....I think it was a M3 once .....must have belonged to Colonel Saunders ..... looked like the interior was only fit for keeping chickens in it :thumbdo:
