Apparently the front seats weigh 20kg lighter too.

Either way all the weight saving disappears when I get in... off to the gym to make me a lightweight model

From what I have read those early e36 M3s were imported as "semi knockdowns" into SA. IE they were not complete cars they were assembled locally.

Its such a cool car, as standard they had that mouth grill colour coded, which was a huge bone of contention at a concourse a while ago with an M3 belonging to another fanatic. Judges argued it was aftermarket when infact they rolled off the production line colour coded. Useless facts thou, truth is that is a fine example of the first of the first local 3 series M cars and the start of a benchmark in engineering brilliance.

I see the savings in weight are, no sunroof, and no rear headrests... Wonder what else?

No rear sun roller blind
No premium audio system - I presume this also meant no CD shuttle in the boot
No electric motors on seats
No leather
No Airbag. This also meant you got the nice M Tech II steering wheel

I remember seeing one new in the parking lot at sanlam centre in red with 'cloth' seats & I was disgusted that an M3 came out of the factory without leather.

Fast forward till today & that interior spec is pure porn!

Yeah I've only seen one with the grill colour coded, still don't think it's factory spec'd like that but anyway, every other early "lightweight" model I've seen had a black grill down in front.
