Guys just bewarn about Vanos overhuals.

My 3.2 4 door started making noise. Had the complete vanos serviced at a workshop in edenvale. After the overhaul car made 160kw on there Dyno.

She pulled like a steam train from 2000rpm in 1st:rollsmile:

After few 1000km's the crap started. Vanos started leaking, on of the solonoids was butched resulting in the head where o ring sits to crack. this eventually completely broke.

The Vanos unit was toast evens with new solonoids.

So becareful with which garage you send your car to for vanos overhual. Spoke with RGM after this and they advised that they were not aware that there was any garage in JHB that could successfully overhual the vanos with local parts.

lol im sure i can go down to the shop not and buy some o rings that will fit should work out quite cheap :fencelook:

honestly unless you need the seals right now i would just wait beisan ones... this is an expensive piece of equipment fit the best in this case fitting the best is not even very expensive so there is no reason not to...

M3_devil sounds like you had other problems that seals could not fix...

I take what RGM says with a grain of salt I have found on a number of occasions where he has been wrong completely wrong...

If you read though the procedures on beisan they are very detailed if you follow them it wont go wrong... hell if americans ca do it in their back yards why cant we?

these prices still need to be confirmed and the real price will only be known when the parts are landed you can expect it to be a little more that this:

$110 for the rattle repair
$100for the seals
$54 for other odds and ends needed for the job (these you can get from bmw if it works out cheaper)

there are also some special tools you will need if you DIY:
then there is the BMW crankshaft turning socket $68.04
BMW water pump pulley holder $37.76 (this can easily be made)

they did not make it easy to work on the e36 M3 vanos :yuck:

I will be bringing in the kits when they become available
if you interested you can put your name on the list so i have an idea of how many to bring in will PM you before i place the order :)

email from dr vanos:

Hi Zunaid,

The rebuild cost is $500 if you send your unit to us, plus $55 return shipping
It usually takes 2-3 days for the rebuild service.
We need the complete vanos, plus the 2 splined gears that fit at the back of the vanos. (see photos)
The rebuilt vanos should last several years. The seals are much better quality that stock and should really never need replacing again. Since the solenoids are re-used and not brand new, we cannot guarantee the life of those, but new solenoids are $2000usd so the trade-off is cost effective.

Let me know if you have any other questions,
Chris

just remember shipping takes time (up to 4 weeks in normal post one way) if you send it with quicker post you might end up paying more then the $100 you saving... i would rather have them send me a vanos and send the old one back to limit the down time...

true, im hearing alot about people adjusting their vanos? can anyone shed light on that how does one tune the vanos? and what are the advantages of that? does it mean that it will suffer lower down in the rev range in power and gain in the higher revs?

i have no idea how to tune vanos i leave that to people who know what they are doing... but you need a healthy vanos adjusting an unhealthy one wont really work...

Chiplogic should be able to help you out and give you the right advice as far as that goes...

Also something to consider when using Dr Vanos.
You pay duties on the unit, not alot I think it was just VAT (14%). IF you pay via paypal you only have a month to receive a refund. So you need to get he Vanos unit back to them in a month to get your deposit back. If it takes longer then that, they will need to wire the money back to your account which incurs bank charges (more then what I expected).
I would look at insuring the unit both ways, its normally 10% of the insured value. If it gets lost on either side, your deposit is gone.

Otherwise the service from Chris is top notch and the units are great quality. My mech was sceptical before I got mine as I did it as preventative maintenance. But once it was in the car the difference was noticeable. Tolerances in the old unit just appear to be no good. The is especially seen in the e46 with the vanos hub failures.

so to be safe if you dont mind the car standing for a while and have another car to get around it might be safer to just send them your unit + insurance on the unit, would you not have to pay any import duties other than tax?

Well it boils down to your car waiting for a long time, or the risk of paying bank duties.
But they dont have any S50B3* Vanos units in stock anyways, so you have to send yours up.
