Hi all,

Here I go again:

Tonight I stop at a spar to buy some din dins. I get back into my car and drive home. When I get there, I turn the key to turn off the car but while I turn the key I notice it feels a little odd....then completely loose. I am able to turn the key 360 degrees, pull it out and put it back in....while the car is on.

I had to disconnect the battery and stall the car to turn it off. needless to say, I cant get her started.

I need someone in PTA who can fix this asap. Do you guys know anyone who would be able to come to my place and sort it out, possibly on saturday?

Pls post/pm me here. Tel 078 711 5704

Thanks guys.

they are fine.

i'm pretty sure its just an issue of the car being older. I have had the car for about a year and a half and even when I purchased it, sometimes, very rarely, the key could swivel through the 360 turn, but only if the key wasnt pushed in properly. I think it just finally gave way.

I forgot to mention its a 1998 328i if that makes any difference.

I heard some where that there is a coil around the ignition switch on your car that energizes the key so that the immobiliser can recognize it.

Apparently when this coil goes your key will turn loosely in the ignition with no resistance at all.

seems like nobody does call outs.

seems i cant get around this issue without towing the car. And bemow spares seems to have a telkom issue....none of their numbers work...rofl.
BMW want me to tow the car there and then wait 6-8 days to order/deliver parts. Really?

Had exactly the same problem on my E39 538i auto. The barrel turns 360 degrees. Had the locksmith come out (he was in the vicinity) and he fixed it here at my home. Took about an hour and he charged me R680 iirc. (He fixed the ignition key/barrel on my E36 318iS last week also - was swopping the new key/barrel so that the original key would fit the barrel - took an hour and he charged me R220, but then it was at his shop). What happens with the barrel turning 360 is that it has a sort of stop to prevent thieves from stealing the car and with age it sort of wears off and the barrel starts turning 360 degrees. He took it out (had quite a time because the key got stuck inside) and fixed the levers which were quite worn and then drilled a hole in the side of the barrel and put a self tapper screw in to prevent it from turning 360. Ignition has been working like a charm since then.

yep, solo man, exactly the same thing.

So I called out the locksmith.....Alister 012 323 1603. Really cool old man. Knew exactly what he was doing. had my barrell sorted out with the screw for 600 bucks and he came round to the house. He also quoted me 200 for labour if I get a new barrell and key which he recomends.

So, If anyone is having issues like this, I suggest getting those replacement parts sooner rather than later and taking it to a locksmith. It will cost you a hell of a lot less than taking it to stealers.

I will call BMW to find out how much a new key is....I dont think its gonna be cheap. But I dont think we can avoid that.

But all in all, I'm glad things got sorted quickly.

Thanks again to everyone helping out on this post:thumbs:
