around the R35k mark to repair puts you around R100k

I'd say pay 50k. Budget 50k for motor depending which route the OP takes. And budget 10k for suspension and other things which can't be felt without driving.

lets keep it on track & help the OP..look you can ask a milli for a car if you want but its what they are actually selling for...in my opinion if you build a car like this it needs to come in a lot cheaper than retail. Ive done this before...you have to get it for as cheap as possible as there are always other costs that pop up. brakes, shocks, gaskets, servicing, gear oil, i did prop etc. etc. you also don't just pop & engine in & boom it starts & is ready to go.

True.. but they are rare especially German Spec.. anyways good luck to the OP.. hope you get it and sort it out and make it a beautiful example..

i would say a working e36 M3 depending on condition could sell between R80K to R120k.

There are then those rare examples that are damn near show room condition that could fetch a bit more.

This can also work , Bottom line don't spend anything more than R100k including purchase to have her back on the road , there are some dent E36 M3 you can get with decent millage and well looked aftered for around R130k-150k

IMHO I wouldn't pay more than R25k for that car. The question is why do you want it?
Do you wanna fix and sell for a profit or you've always wanted the car and now you finally have an opportunity to buy it and plan to keep it for a long time. If your response is the former, put your money in the bank or go on holiday with that money and have a jol. If your response is the latter buy it, but just be aware of what you are getting yourself into. Rebuilding that motor will not cost R20k or R50k, it will cost you a LOT of money which you will never get back. This is what R20k would've bought for you in 2015:

Head gasket
Valve spring
Sump gasket
Rod bearings

Why do think the owner parked the car at the panelbeaters and went to buy an e92 M3?

I agree with OP around the 45K mark , car standing for 2 years , need to consider replacing the hoses , rubbers , tires(depending how old that rubber is) that is besides the engine .

Taking on a job like this and been a "German spec"M3 you want it restored to its full glory and properly , no cutting corners. That is going to cost and you have to hope for no extra surprises.

Once completed though you will have an awesome car to enjoy, add t the collection or sell .

Hi Guys, i know this has been discussed over and over, but mine is a little different.
I have the opportunity of getting a German Spec M3
Resprayed Avus Blue
Stock std
Piston went through the block

This vehicle has been parked at a panelbeaters in Lenasia for some time, covered in proper plastic.(For Storage Purpose)
I have spoken to the owner who also has a v8 M3 and i need to throw a number.
Everything works and the car is really clean and neat.
Just the motor.

The owner is a genuine guy and i know him for over 17 years.
What do you guys think.
Take note i dont want to fit a 2jz or 1jz:smilebounce:

Who coined the “German Spec” description and why? I too thought it was a thing for long time until I joined the forum.

As for the OP, a project like this sounds like fun but I would be wary of what you pay upfront. This vehicle is definitely going to cost a lot and demand time to get everything right but depending on what you do yourself, who you know and what is outsourced, I am sure you will have fun and stay within an acceptable cost scale. I will also follow this build if you do it.

Depends what you want out of the car. You already stated you won't be building it with dropping in a Jap motor. Hence we assume it is for restorative / ownership reasons. I have researched the topic a lot both on forum and off. To restore an M car, you need a Big bank Balance that you are not scared to drain! My 2c!

How precious is your time to you. .
I'm sure with a little search you would find a running E36 of similar spec for less than what this build will cost.
Even if you offer 50k there might be many pricey unknowns..
If your intentions are to one day sell, the outstanding service of two years and respray could pose problems.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the positive responses.
A E36 M3 was always on one of the cars i would love to have.
I was always under the impresion German Spec went with 2 doors and vader seats.
I guess we learn something everyday.

I have not even put a offer in as the owner is almost like family to me, and has no current interest in sorting it out.
He could say Give me 30k and come tow it , as the license is still up to date.

This vehicle will be brought back to it former glory and used for breakfast runs or friday weekend cruising with my 5 year old princess and 2 year old baby boy.

Hope fully i can keep it in the family until they grow up.
I am in no hurry to get it sorted and dont mind waiting, how ever if i can get it a good price i know its a start and the project would have to go on.

Bud from the sounds of it you quite keen on this car... if you've had a good look at, have an indication of the current condition and an understanding that some parts could be costly...basically going into this with open eyes. With a bit of research and input from yourself you can contain costs(maintaining quality) as well without the need for leaving your car in the hands of " experts", many ways to skin a cat...

Than go for it, have a sit down with your mate and come to a reasonable price.....
