E36 clutch stuck slave cylinder?

Hi all,

My helper complained that the garage was full of oil on the floor and she had cleaned it up.

After my attempts to start my E36 I noticed the clutch has no resistance and was stuck in. I could pull it out though. My immediate thoughts were slave cylinder, but could not confirm as the leak was cleaned.

Questions for you fine folk:
1. Could it be anything else?
2. Do I need an OEM part, or does Goldwagen store the same?
3. Anybody have the part number for the slave cylinder?
4. Any tips on install for the slave cylinder? I know that this could be bad news if installed incorrectly.

1. Could it be anything else?
check brake fluid level to see if it has gone down to confrim
pumping clutch will also squirt more fluid out if it is the slave

2. Do I need an OEM part, or does Goldwagen store the same?
OEM one i got for my e46 was the same price as GW

3. Anybody have the part number for the slave cylinder?
put vin into BMWfans and get the part number on the site

4. Any tips on install for the slave cylinder? I know that this could be bad news if installed incorrectly.
just make sure you locate it correctly on the clutch fork easy job otherwise

The clutch also has a Master cylinder, located in the footwell.

The master cylinder, normally leaves a wet carpet on the drivers side, further up behind the brake pedal.

The slave cylinder could have packed up, or the hose feeding it could have perished and gave up.

Stick your head under the car, should show signs of leakage on the box itself, while you there you can inspect the pipe feeding the slave cylinder. If all checks out on the underside, then its got to be the Master cylinder.

Another possibility is that your pressure plate has collapsed, hence no resistance.

Hope it helps somewhat

Thanks guys..

@ Jeremy - Yes, but I could not reach as I cant get under the car. Jacking her up on tiles is a bad idea. From what I saw there was residue at the start of the bell housing, that why I suspect slave cylinder. Master cylinder will leak in the car.

Me being claustrophobic does not help as there mere thought of getting under the car makes me cringe.. :dunnoanymore:

Please stay away from the Goldwagen one unless it's a FTE branded one. Or rather buy the kit from bmw and replace the seals on your old one

Claustrophobia is no good, I used to have it (probably still do to an extent), but not very badly.

If there was residue, then its almost certainly the slave.
I havent worked on an e36, but I assume it cant be too much different from an e30 in this case.
Its a small DIY, but bleeding that thing can be a headache sometimes:skit:

They quoted R850 for the FTE - agents want R2200.

Not to clued up with aftermarket parts for the the E36 since I only have her for a week, but is FTE any good?

Just an update, I could get far enough under the car but I noticed the hydraulic fluid leaking on the right side of the bell housing while the clutch slave is on the left side, so now I'm confused:skit:

Any input mate?

FTE is the oem one, take it. I paid R1000 for an M Coupe one from the dealership 3 weeks ago.
