E36 Clean Whining Sound

Hi Guys,

Need some help,

Since Saterday I've noticed that on Idle and Acceleration my car makes a whining sound, almost as if there is a turbocharger connected.

If the car is in neutral, with the clutch pedal up, I hear the sound, the minute I press the clutch pedal to the floor the sound whines down and stops.

On acceleration the sounds pitch increases in conjunction with the revs of the car.

What could it be...:argh: Just recently sorted out my power steering, shocks, tie-rod ends, bushes, this car is starting to work on my nerves...

From what you say when pressing the clutch inn. I would say its the clutch release bearing.
But the progressive whine on accceleration indicates gearbox bearings.

Is it there in all gears, or just the first 2 or 3?

I had a high pitched whine on mine and replacing a 'dry' pulley helped
I replaced all 3 pulleys/tensioner as preventative maintenance
This done as extension to regular oil service

The sound is most noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear,

Is a clutch release bearing expensive to replace? and how long can I drive the car for.

I've noticed nothing else, the car still has the same power, gear changes are still smooth and the clutch is still perfect.

Early this year my car was making the same noise, replaced the released bearing & that noise was still there. Problem is the idle gear, the bearing around it wears out & makes that sound. Its nothing too serious but that sound is irritating...

I'm hearing the same sound in 1st and 2nd. In 3rd and up its a lot quieter but I can just still here it.

if it is the release bearing. Gearbox has to come out:cry:
gearbox bearings (if it is) can be done same time as well.

If you have not done clutch and pressure plate in a looong while then do that as well- After that you wil be good to go for quite a few kilomtres.

But this is all forum diagnostics. It could just be a simple dry pully or sumtin.
Take it to a mackie to just have a look and give you a diagnosis.

What area you at?
Maybe the guys here can recommend someone.

+1

And I also found it kind of quiets down in neutral when rev goes up between 2000 and 2500.
