Sorry to hear about that and welcome to the forum.

Could you post a pick of the roof, that will give us a better understanding of the problem although i think personally that you need to redo the roof completely. The material is probably worn out. I could be wrong but others are welcome to comment.....Hope you get it sorted though.

Are there any visible tears in the roof? i know the area of the canvas where it touches the frame could wear thin and become a problem. Because surely you would SEE if it rains in while you are driving, I don't see how rain under "normal" conditions would penetrate a canvas that doesn't have any damage. The best trial and error method would be to sit in your car and let someone hose onto the roof with a spraying action and then down the sides between the door and the rear panel. Also check your weather strips (rubbers surrounding the inner door frame), they sometimes get brittle and can let water in. Also check the seal between the door and rear windows. And check your under-carriage as well. Oh yes, welcome and share some pics of your ride

Hope this is not considered as a thread hi-jack......just wanted to know, what can be used to wash the canvas, soapy water? I do not allow these car wash guys to use the jetwash or pressure guns on the roof, usually, i just tell them to rinse it using a normal hose pipe. Anything you guys can recommend?

quickest way to try figure out where its coming from is to get a garden hose and hose the car down in pieces, then get into the car and see if anywhere has beaded water or shows signs of leaking, repeat until you find where its getting in.

it probably won't be this but IF for instance you had a hole there due to rust or something, as you drive in the rain and water splashes up from the tyres, the water can penetrate the carpet and into the cabin. But like i said, I doubt it in your case. Check your door rubbers for leaks, and do the hose thing like I and Cole suggested. Alternatively, you can take the car to a Bodyshop, most of them do water leaks as well, but rather diagnose the problem yourself.

RE: The lights, got them with the car, which I bought in Pretoria.

Regular car wash shampoo's should be kept away from the canvas roof and the rear window as well. Nothing wrong with giving the roof a spray with a pressure washer, actually very good method of keeping the roof clean if done in a methodical pattern from one side to the other letting it run of the side.
BMW stocks a special spray on cleaner and conditioner that can be used a few times annually to keep the roof in good condition. They also keep a polish of sorts for the rear window which works wonders in removing the hazing from the window and helps keep it clear, comes in little tube similar to a toothpaste one.

Thanks for the advice Wykid, didn't know that BM had this special spray for the canvas. Definitely need to get that cause i don't know when last the roof was treated/conditioned.

To be honest I don't wash my top at all, and it never looks dirty. It gets a "wash" when I take her out in the rain, which is seldom. I am thinking of re-dying to the original green though as it starting to look a bit faded.

The spray that BMW has is really expensive...iv seen some aftermarket ones but haven't really tried it

Its been a while since I have bought any so not sure of current pricing, but it was not to expensive a few years ago. If you take into consideration what a replacement roof costs, its a worthwhile expense. Besides it last for a long time due to it only needing to be used a couple of time a year. You not sure of the compatibility of the aftermarket stuff with the roof, you would be quite surprised at how many different types of canvas materials are used on cars.
