I get between 11/100km and 11.3/100km on my 328i. doing about 39-42kilometers to work and back daily. I prefer sticking to highways were possible. As noticed, the 328i hates the stop-go city driving.

Me & my 1998 E36 328iM does 8..12 liter/100km depending on driving style.

Short distance with medium foot town driving averages around 11 liter/100km.

I've been unable to do better than 10 liter/100km in town unless i crawl my way around.

Very true - start & stop driving kills the budget. Highway driving is the way to go for a 328iM

Im averaging around 11.5L per 100km in Urban areas with my 328i Verts/Manual, ofcos...this is conservative driving but pressing it now and then.
I get 9.9 to 10.5 with my 320i Individual Steptronic. On long distances, it comes down to 8.9 driving at a regular speed but not exceeding 130km...

On my sedan, I drive from PTA to JHb every day, clocking about 120km there and back.
Traffic is unpredictable, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, but i'm averaging 9L per 100km with mixed highway and city traffic.
Weekly cost of fuel for me averages 500 bucks, excluding weekend drives.

14L seems way too high, but I dont really know what verts are like. However, even my brother's e39 540i does not do 14L and he roughly does the same trip I do every day.

Fuel costs are not pleasant at all, even at 9L per 100km. And when the tolls come in....sheesh.....its a lot of money just to get to work every day.

I get between 10.5 and 11 - mixed driving in my sedan with 180 000kms.

It used to be lighter before I changed the intake

Hey guys i have a e36 328 indv i tried a new driving style this week and am very surprised
i normally do 400 to 450 klms a week and used to use a tank an week R550 to fill a tank is bad nowadays
Please note this is very had to do LOL
drive the car 1st and second gear not more than 3000 revs then the rest of the gears between 2.5 and 3000 revs once you at 120 /130 just cruze and you will see you consumption drop to around 7/100kms
I have used my car the whole week like this and still have 1/2 tank left

I get 11.0 - 12.0 l/100km with my 96 manual sedan. Thats mixed driving, occasional traffic situations with a healthy dose of spirited driving thrown in. This figure is based on tank to tank readings although the obc does indicate about the same.

I noticed the key to good economy with these cars is to use all that torque. i.e dont rev the motor, but change early, the torque on tap allows more than sufficient forward progress.

I totally agree with LPM320 and Brasco :thumb: Because the 328i got so much bottom end torque, theres no need to rev it high in 1st and 2nd gear, change early

I also have a 96 sedan and around town my car averages just over 12 and that too can be improved if i lift my suspension (because of the drop, I have to anticipate speed bumps and driveways more carefully)

On the open road averaging between 130 and 160 i get 7.7 l/100km

Drive like miss daisy at 100 and i get 6.6 l/100km :)

Hi 2 all BM fanatics,

I have a '96 E36 328i Automatic, and just want to know how can I get it to be more economical. Is there a place on the engine where I can adjust something maybe or what can I do? I currently get 6.15km/l or 16.26l/100km in town and a little better on the open road. I do service it regularly.

Please help cause this is my only transport and its killing me with $$$

Hmmmmm, that consumption is excessive.

There is no adjustment.
You have to make sure everything is serviced and working properly.

Make sure you have done the service:
- change oil and filter
- fuel filter
- spark plugs (make sure you use the correct OEM or equivalent)
- air filter
- check for any vacuum leaks, cracks on intake manifold.
- check all wires to sensors like air flow meter etc

Thank you 444YYY, I will check the last two steps as I do change everything when I do a service.

So are the verts are heavier on juice than the sedans ? I had a friend who owned a sedan E36 328i and use to get 10l/100km mixed driving

I also say that sometimes just to feel a tad better
