Hey guys I have a 1997 328i I was just wondering what you guys think about doing a muffler delete and straight piping it ?

Decat and leave the rest alone. Else get the complete exhaust of a 3.0 m3
Will this car throw error codes if just a straight decat is done?

Hi,

I did muffler deletes on quite a few cars in the past, a straight pipe sounds horrible, and I also got those "eh's un idiot" looks, the sound is too close to that of a broken exhaust, if you want a proper free flow rather go to a De Graaff, Cowley or Power Pipes agent.

I trust fellow members will chime in too with other suggestions, but I am very happy with the s/s Cowley system on my 318i, quiet enough when cruising, with a very nice growl when the revs go above 3500 rpm :blowheart:

Dual 57mm system with an x pipe where the middle box should be and a fairly large back box. It will sound like a straight pipe when flat foot and quite subtle and no drone when cruising at 120.

I got this advice more than once for my 1998 E36 328i.... why these cars in particular? Are they inefficient?

I recall the E36 launched without cats initially and changed up when unleaded was introduced.

We are curious, come on Jody, how about helping out with the mystery? :)

TWT and Supa Quick also have some very decent setups which I have seen and heard

Dont know what Jody is running on his car but it sounds sweet:blowheart:

If I may answer on his behalf. (not much detail though :hammerhead:)

Its a TNT header (from Master Parts) into a custom dual system from ART in the Cape.

And 3 Degraaf boxes, 2 boxes in the middle and a large back box

I have done a muffler delete on my e36 325i and have subsiquently stroked it out to a 2.8l. The exhaust is extremely loud outside the car but much less drone inside the car as opposed to my old Powerflow free flow. The volume of the exhaust does get to me on the daily commute but when you drop the windows and and mash the pedal it sounds as if angels are calling you from above.

So have you replaced the middle section of the muffler with straight pipes?
