Guys, I have the answer for you...

In the 90s the USA was very heavy on power and emission controls etc and they taxed cars more heavily over 141 kws so you'll noticed all similarly power BMWs, Audis, Mercs etc in the 90s all miraculously made exactly the same power of 141 kws.

So, an E36 328i actually makes more power than 141 kws on the flywheel, it's just that the entire world's marketing material all stated 141 kws.

A mate of mine in the club owns an E36 328i and has all the facts. I'll get all the accurate info and let you chaps know...

Ah, that makes some sense then, cool, i await your further information.

Hey guys... I know this is a dead thread revival of note... But I'm damn curious to find out what the outcome of all of this was! How about it? Anyone got the answers about the 328i's actual output? Or anyone know why the newer beemers are loosing so much power? :fencelook:

Ps: is any of this true at all?

Maybe because if the bigger wheels and 6speed gearboxes? Also maybe because of the bigger stronger drive-shafts?

It's an interesting match-up. The E36 weighs 100-200kgs less than the E46, but the E46 has that extra 20nm.

Should just settle this with some real runs :fencelook:

Agreed - I was out and missed the last one

Would be good to see how my stock performance compares against the two E36's and your car

Depending on the speed range the e36 328i will probably give the e46 330i a tough time, at higher speeds I don't think the 328i will stand much a chance though. Have compared a 328i (e46) and 330i before and up to about 160 there is not very much in it, past that the 330i just starts to open up a gap. So you can consider that the e36 328i weighs less than its e46 counterpart, but also that the M52TU in the e46 delivers its torque a bit better than the M52 in the e36. Not sure about the e90 though (all I can say is that the e34 540i leaves them for dead)

WRT the dyno results on RGM's site, they are wrong, I emailed them about it years ago they then changed the dyno charts, but later on they changed it back again. There is really no way that a 330i will have more drive train losses than a 328i as they have an identical drive train (unless the 330i is a six speed)

Verdigo, your 118wkw is at the coast right? RGM is at reef level so 17% less power on cars at altitude. You cannot compare 2 different dynos figures, especially one at the coast and one at altitude...

On Budler Motorsport's dyno a e46 330i puts out +-100wkw, on RGM's dyno the same 330i will put out +-120wkw.
A dyno is just a tool to tune a vehicle and no 2 dynos are the same so you cannot compare figures from different dynos.

100% facts.
Thanks Gizmo.
Only way to compare is to have two cars next to each other and a few runs. That's it.

You sir are correct but i have left 540i's for dead already...after 4th gear it's murder...maybe those okes could not drive or maybe i was just lucky:fencelook:
No 328 have sat close with me after 4th gear yet...it gets pretty ugly for them but on a 400m they are a force to be reckoned with:thumbs:

In the interest of research....Does any 330i or 540i :) want to take it to a pvt test track and lay this puppy to rest?

Im at the coast then we can have a similar test done up at altitude

You need to give Freerider's car another run. That thing is pulling like a boss now.
