E36 328i - Time for an overhaul?

Hi guys.

I have had my e36 328i for a year now, in which time i have covered 24000km. The car has performed absolutely faultlessly, without missing a single beat inbetween. The proverbial ''start and go'' car.

However, the car has always had a slight smoking problem from the time i bought it, and it seems to be getting worse as time goes on. It is not constant smoking, but only smokes at odd intervals. I do suspect that my valve stem seals are nearing the end of the road, as a large amount of smoking occurs on downhill, off-throttle situations. Other than that there is a bit of smoke when accelerating through the gears, but this is not constant and occurs at random intervals. The car does use quite a bit of oil, but this is totally dependant on how hard the car is being driven, but overall oil consumption is well over the average. I have already replaced the PCV valve.

I am prepared to spend cash to get my engine 110% again, just that i dont want to throw cash down the drain and end up doing things that are not neccesary.

What would be the best way to tackle this problem? Are there any tests/checks that can be done to try and pin point the problem before i start taking the engine apart? Anybody had similar experiences with their 328i's?

Thanks in advance....

I reassembled a M52 yesterday, these motors are tough as nails

I believe you are correct with it being valve stem seals. The seals themselves are cheap and not difficualt to do.

Its about half a day to strip off the head, and about a day to put it back, if you know what your doing.

I did not know what I was doing, so I had a Werner to help/read do most of the work.

I would say, do a compression test, if your compression is about right, then leave it.

Your looking at 3k around that if it is the valve stem seals..

"ons rook almal so biejtie skelm"

Compression test say your good, leave it :)

Thanks for the reply Leonard.

A compression test is a logical step forward. Will get that done.
