I have massive sludge build-up, what is the best oil recommended to counter this problem. Im getting different feedback from oil companies.
My driving conditions are urban related clocking about 35000km/yr.

First off, Welcome to the forum.

Please upload some pics. we are all picture ho's on this site.

Regarding your problem, I suggest you do an oil flush. Easy enough:

buy a bottle of engine oil flush, pour into engine via oil cap, run engine for a short while and then drain oil.

I suggest a good, fully synthetic oil. Something Like Castrol Edge or Castrol Magnatec.

Theres alot of literature on this site, so you could search for it.

LiquiMoly makes good oils. You could try them as well.

Sorry if I havent given you any definitive answers. Im doing my part and welcoming you. Hope you stay.

Aweh thx for the welcome.
I actually broke my intake camshaft, and bought a imported motor which are as we speak being fitted. I just dont want to make the same mistake with the sludge build-up, as this was the reason my oil pump packed up and no oil came up to the cams.

How many km's on the imported motor?

This is what MiniMike posted a while back about oils:
He used to work for LiquiMoly.

Sure can Andrew.

As you guys know you get a variety of oils (Mineral, Semi Synthetic etc etc) and all these oils have different tolerances. Your engine also has tolerances.

If you buy a car... Run it in on the normal oil and then run Fully Synthetic oil from the start or anytime before 60 000km more or less then that car can run a Fully Synthetic like Mobil 1 until the day it is scrapped without any issues.

However... In this case we have a 318i BMW.

1. This is not a high performance engine, therefore it does not require a high performance oil.
2. BMW pays for the servicing which means they would not ever put a Fully Synthetic into this car especially since it is a 318i. We can safely then say that this car has never had a Fully Synthetic in it from BMW's service department.
3. We assume at this point that Legacy's car has even had a full service history... We dont actually know... It could have missed a service which Legacy doesnt even know about.
4. We assume that this car is below 150 000km on its clocks.

So the above is common sense. Here is the issue I had before reading that he had not used the Mobil.

1. Nowhere is it recommended for a 318i BMW to take a 0W40 oil. So already the oil in itself is wrong for the inner workings of the 318i engine.
2. Nobody asked about approvals. Does Mobil 0W40 even have a BMW stamp on it?
3. This oil is far to thin on startup causing not only extra stress on the oil pump etc etc but also on the engine as this oil is like water.
4. Mileage. If this car has over 150 000 on the clock any FULLY SYNTHETIC oil is an absolute no no unless the car has run a Fully Synthetic from its first service. Why? Tolerances.
5. Tolerances. When using a standard 5W30 or 5W40 Hydrocracked oil (Probably what BMW is using) your engine builds tolerances to the oil. The thickness of the oil creates different aversions and adhesion's within the metal of the engine and when you suddenly use a Fully Synthetic or thinner oil the oil works its way into those aversions and gaps and can cause head gaskets to blow, rings to feck out and much more harm which people dont pause for a second to think of.
6. Engine Flushing. Without know what oil was previously in this car NOBODY can make a recommendation. YOU CANNOT MIX A FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL WITH ANOTHER OIL. Be it a hydrocracked, mineral or even another Fully Synthetic oil. Mobil 1 for example is a group 5 man made oil. It has a base and it is designed specifically for its purpose. The second you mix even a ml of different oil you throw out the chemical structure of the oil. This leads to boundary or mixed lubrication which is when wear occurs. The only way to go from a standard hydrocracked / Mineral oil or even another Fully Synthetic to Fully synthetic oil is to do a very vigorous engine flush. Without the flush you may as well add a cup of sand to the oil when you chuck that Mobil 1 in.
7. Topping up. Nobody mentioned to the OP that he needs more then 4 litres as he needs to top up his oil.... In this case probably weekly with a pint had he used the Mobil. Once again... As above... You cannot simply chuck in a pint at the petrol station when running a Fully Synthetic.

And finally... Why on earth would you want a Fully Synthetic in a 318i engine anyway? You service it every 15 000km using a decent Hydrocracked oil and your engine will run for years. A Fully Synthetic is complete overkill on that engine. And if you are concerned then grab some additives from Liqui Moly... I have tried them and tested them. They work like a bomb and even with all of them added to the bill of a normal oil its still cheaper then the R700 they charge you for Mobil 1.

Hope that makes sense? Hmmm... I miss working for Liqui Moly. Spit

Mike
