Hi all, have a 316 needing a rear suspension overhaul and was thinking of upgrading to disc brakes. I looked up a thread, but got lost in the technicalities. Is it feasible? :fencelook:

Yes , but with the handbrake in the disc you may need a new handbrake cable and mounts , so not just bolt drums off and discs on .
Have a look at the 325tds rear brakes ...

Will do, just remember reading somewhere that the rear suspension is carried over from the E30 on the 316, not the Z link system. I don't want to re engineer the back end! :fencelook:

You will need the trailing arms, discs, calipers and handbrake cables from a e36 with discs, 328i has ventilated brakes, go for that.

 Lots of stop there. At the front, 328i calipers and discs also? And then a drivetrain to match? I smell a project here, hope the customer falls for it! :fencelook:

Will the customer pay ? Lets say R2500 for 4 discs , calipers rear trailing arms with hubs and fittings . Labour ?
I can maybe check the 325tds out in Butterworth , I will check the ATE catalogue if it has brakes similar to the 325i or 328i .
Will check if I can get photos if that car has brakes etc .

Not to worry, I'll go check that one out over the weekend, I have to go to Butterworth anyway. I have the tds to compare with here, and a 325 also, so will investigate. He'll pay, if only slowly, he LOVES his car, but it is a little "pap" for him now. The body is very good, but with 550k on the clock, shot brakes and suspension, re-sale is nothing, so to change it is hard. Time for a slow development into something stronger. A Fanatic in his heart!

The ATE catalogue has the e36 318iS to 328i with the same front discs , same as the e46 318i , 320i and 323i .AG 593 disc pads .
Rear discs e36 318i to 328i are all the same number except the 323i .
AG 538 disc pads .

On the e46 there are different discs listed but the same pads are used !!

There is a e36 325i in BW .......the diff tore from the body .......My old rusty that I lent to a guy working there . He will jack her up and look , I know the yanks had a lot of these troubles . I said to him if he gets a body he can build the 325i stuff over and keep the car .

I want to go see a e30 body there soon ....

Interesting, wonder what the difference in the discs is. Thickness different or vented perhaps? Have been quoted R4500 for a complete 320 rear suspension on exchange, so that may be the solution.

Thanks for the tip, never heard of them before. Still have to lose the drum brakes at the back first, but will definately look into their products.
