Hi Guys

i'm new on the forum, i got my first BMW last week tuesday. a 1995 E36 316i auto

car is not in the greatest nick but i got it for a real bargin.

now the problems im having is an unusually high fuel consumption. its currently around 15-17lt/100km....
it also idles very eraticly, ie in neutral it idles @ +- 1500rpm, in drive 1000rpm
it also battles to start sometimes.

other than that car drives fine.

what i would like to ask all the experts and BMW fanatics is....
how do you adjust the co settings on this car? is it by the adjustment screw on the AFM?
also what would cause the other problem.

any advice or input would be much appricieated.

Thanks

Thanks nikhil, i'll keep that in mind as a last option.

so i have found that i can adjust the COs via a screw on the side of the AFM (square box just after the airbox) . now the problem i have is that it just dosent stop turning, both directions.
so i got curious and decided to open the thing to have a look and found that the screw is attached to a pot switch.

what i want to know is how does it get to max and min adjustment? AFAIK there is supposed to be a physical limit. but this dosent have one.

ive got the Bently manual but it dosent mention anything about the CO settings.

Please help me guys, my 316I is currently getting 17lt+/100km in town driving, its really bad.

My 1992 E36 316i Manual was getting max 350Km per tank.. How many KM you getting from a tank? cause auto is usually heavier than manual especially on a small engined car

im i get around 70-90km on 1/4 tank (15lt) i havent got thru a tank yet as i just got the car.
which pretty hectic....concidering that if the tank is 60lt i think thats really bad.
i've been searching around on the net and it seems that it has been quoted at 11.2L/100km Urban.

Im Driving lightly and im getting 17l/100km , this is driving the car not more than 3000rpm and not more than 1/2 throttle.

i think my consumption is really bad.

Best to take the car to a bm mechanic ( not dealer ) ,he will check afm and air fuel ratio .Idle is not controlled by afm , I think it has idle control valve which can be removed and cleaned .( 325i has one ) you clean it with paraffin or carb cleaner till inner gate moves freely .My 325i manual gave about 13-15 l/100 km in town , my 328i gives about 11.5-12.5 average -20 km of highway ( 130-180 km/h ) per day and about 400 km/week town 500 /550 km a week on a tank .
The workshop manual may give resistance values for afm .
