E36 3.0 M3 Preventative Maintenance

Afternoon Chaps.

I am back from Joburg with my new purchase 1994 E36 M3 (one of the first 50 "lightweights" like Calypso's) BTW I weighed her and she comes in at 1420 (thats still with spare wheel in ) not sure how that matches up to the normal e36 M3. Anyway weight saving is gone when I get in :yuck:

She is in far far better condition than I had hoped, interior seats are all unmarked and oh how I love that steering wheel, and bar a small scare in Jozie with a fuel like, mechanically she seems fine to.

I will put up popper photos once she has been detailed.

She drove down from Joburg faultlessly and fuel economy was staggering 1l /1600km (oh wait she was on the back of a train ):rollsmile:

OK So simple question, every thing is running 100 percent bar a bit of exhaust rattle, I put her through her paces today and she held up very well.

So, I have up to R20k to spend on preventative maintenance. Can you experts tell me a list of what I should possibly do ??

She will stay stock, and I intend to make her look like the day she rolled out....

Help as always appreciated

Congrats, looks great. Looking forward to details of the restoration/maintenance planned. Btw, what's the difference with the "light weight" version that you mention?[/align]

Great stuff.
Mine was 1500 kg on the weigh bridge, with me inside, and half tank fuel.
Subtract me (80kg at that time), and we get 1420kg. Mine being a June 1995....

Does your car have aluminium doors?

Looks awesome btw... Congrats :bravo:

Thats a good point actually I forgot the car had 3/4 a tank of fuel, So i guess that would weigh an additional 50kg ?

Thanks mate.... I am really happy with her condition:thumbs:

Full fluid flush is a start. Car looks good on the flesh. And what about vanos?

100 percent one of the first things on the list is a fluid flush and cooling system overhaul.

There seems to be no Vanos rattle. Im not sure if the Single Vanos suffered as much as the Double Vanos ?

My Understanding and I am sure someone will correct if I am wrong, is that the First 50 M3's imported (or built I am not sure) in to SA by BMW SA were with the idea of racing in Stannic Group N, so the car is essentially the same but with NO frills. No sunroof, No electric seats, Cloth/Alcenthara seats and best of all no Airbag, so you get the best steering wheel :)

I have the original Car Mag test from January 1994, and this car was also one of the first 50.

"There seems to be no Vanos rattle. Im not sure if the Single Vanos suffered as much as the Double Vanos ?"

The vanos non performance is not only due to the rattle which one can hear it is primarily due to the failure of the internal seals which activate the movement of the inlet camshaft.

The vanos oil pump generates 100bar of pressure and that pressure is controlled by a combination of seals which fail and the vanos becomes "de activated".
The effect of the failure is lack of torque between 2000rpm and 5000rpm.

In the case of the s50b30 and s50b32 engines when the vanos is in need of attention the car is noisy and has a diesel like rhythm......maybe 444YYY can explain it a bit better as we did his unit two or three times and we eventually had to get a new body to resolve the issue it presented.

All the same that car is neat, drive it in good health

So what course of action are you recommending ? Repalce the Vanos Seals ?

Overhaul the vanos unit.
Vanos seals
Solenoid seals
Maybe rattle kit for added assurance.
Garage 808 can do it
Vanos seals and rattle kit from "moranor"
Solenoid seals from agents

A mental note for all reading....if it has vanos and is a pre e90 series car it needs vanos overhaul.

My personal advise would be to let Alexander look at the car . I also bought a 1994 m3 not too long ago and if I had not taken it to Alexander it would have been sold by now :ty:
