I've seen one or two on the gum, so there are a couple in SA... (don't know if they are official imports, though)

Hey Nic

My dad is currently in possession of one. Its a 1995 525i Manual, now with 312 000Km on the clock... shes still drives like a dream and is a full import from the UK, built to some weird UK-spec.

Apparently the UK tourings are either "tuned" or have a larger capacity 2700cc 6cyl, as we have been told by previous owners, and have around 20kw more than standard. (Sounds like an Alpina 2.7 conversion to me; power outputs seem to correspond)

However, I can find no proof of such claims, but can concur that it feels quite a bit more powerful than the pair of e36 325is my dad owned back in the late 90's.

OK, so here's the deal.

I was contacted by a random guy on the net and he has a friend on a UK forum who is looking for a SA Spec E34 touring. He has a E34 Sedan SA Spec and there are a few small differences and that's why his friend want's a SA Spec Touring.

I know some things on the cars are different: I have a factory steel sump guard and I think the S African market got them as standard. You wont get that in the UK or US :) While BMW messed about with the front top shock mount sizes throughout production on the 525i Euro, ZA stayed with the same ones. If you put the last 7 digits of your VIN in realoem it tells you what market it was built for and the body (HD)type like this:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=ga11907
Just curious I couldnt find anything about the Touring. I am sure you have them dont you? :)

So the real question I guess is: Was there any E34 Touring built at the Rosslyn plant?? It doesn't seem like it? :dunno:

Did the Rosslyn plant ever make anything other than 3-series BMWs? I know that since the E46 they only made 3s, not sure of what was going on before that, but I doubt that they did ever make anything other than 3s

From what I can gather they did build E34 sedan's. We probably would have never got the E34 540i M (6 speed) if they didn't.

IMHO no e34 tourings were built at Rosslyn , also found no listing in CAR magazine price lists , so it was not a model sold here . Special imports were not listed , they were on application at dealers .

As far as I know, the Touring was not built in SA. They were certainly never advertised as available to purchase. There are a few rolling around, but I think these are imports. Maybe Rosslyn did manufacture some for export, but I doubt BMW would tool up for such a small run in a market the cars were'nt even sold in. The e34 was the last local manufactured 5. From the e39 onwards they are full imports.
