E34 Safety Belt not retracting

I had an issue with my drivers safety belt in that it would not return to the home position when leave the vehicle, and sometimes you actually bash the buckle in the door.

This had to go, so I got a spare safety belt unit thinking that its the spring mechanism on the safety belt unit.

I then stripped out the front seat (for another mod as well) removed the trimmings, repaired all four cables on the front seat at the bottom, and it still did not fix the issue.

What I discovered is that there is a cable that runs from the adustment setting of the safety belt located on the B piller that is tension loaded with a cable that attaches to the bottom of the seat, so as the seat moves backwards, the seatbelt automatically goes up.

Now this of mine is stuffed, and its this cable that needs to be sorted, the safety belt itself is fine, so before you go waste half a day like I did, check this out..

i have read that some guys pull the belt out completly and spray the bottom part of the belt with Q20 or any other silicone base lubricant and that seems to fix the problem aswell , not to sure on the smell though

I have got the same problem on my 540i but passenger side,, did check that cable that adjusts the hight of the belt and it seems fine but belt still does'nt go back by itself....
I have removed the B-pillar covers to look if the belt is not catching something but all seems OK..
What colour seat belts do you have "looking for a new home" LZ? :mmm:

Well the belts are not mine, they belong to Uber, so you will havta chat to Uber Soldaat on them, but they are grey with a black stripe on each side.

Both seems to be in good condition, and I actually serviced both of them as I was planning to put them in my car, but I have another problem, so I dont need them.

Speak to Uber, I am sure you can come up with a deal.. If not, scrapyard.... PM me as I know of a couple of E34's :)

Well my grey interior has seriously grown on me, and I dig it. WHen my seats get really worn I may do a a black interior convert, but till then.. grey it is. So I would stick with the grey.

I am at some point going to be researching an E60 interior into the E34 but thats a phycotic project and very long term, for now... grey it is..

The thing is, I love the shape of the E34,I love the car itself.

I also love new technology, creature comforts, luxury.. things that are dated in the E34.

I am also not a boy racer, I dig a good track day, but purely for fun.... so 200 to 250kw is more then plenty for me, I actually want to drive cars that I build, so building a pure track toy loaded to the hilt with every bolt on accessory is not my style.

Could you imagine taking an up to date interior with everything working and installing it onto a classic such as the E34. It would be just pure awesome.

So either an E65 interior or an E60 interior, I can only dream :)
