e34 M5 Turbine Wheels Function

Hope not a SIAL, just an extract . . .

The M5 came with an unusual wheel design. From 1988-1992 the M5 featured the M-System wheels. These wheels were 8x17J, but came with directional bolted-on wheel covers. Under the cover was a black 5-spoke alloy wheel. The press was critical of the design, often claiming it gave the M5 the appearance of having “white-wall” tires.

LOL, no scoobies in a lake here!!

But before I knew and understood their function I always thought of them as "ugly", but knowing what their function is, they are awesome!!!

The spare does not have its own blower section .
The later throwing star also has directional covers , the one on my spare wheel is for left hand use .

Well done to the bmw engineers. This was very advanced for the time. Were BMW the first to do this? Lambos nowadays have rims designed to do this.

The brakes were stonkingly good on my dad's old M5!:praise: never have I experienced such powerful brakes on a car from that era and 10years after, the design was way ahead of its time.:bravo:

I notice the e34 540i stops diligently :roflol:
I have not done high speed driving so can't comment on brake fade .

There's a vid posted with an E34 M5 running up to speed against an E34 540i M, and if I am correct, you can hear the noise from turbines as the M5 gets up to high speed - that it pretty damm cool if I may say so!!! :praise:

Ok they are gone already.

If somebody bought them who does not own an genuine E34 M5 then...............:fishwack:

My biggest problem trying to restore this car is the M5 stuff been bought for normal E34's.

I have days when I love this car and others like today when I just want to burn it, because i keep loosing out on parts like this for the restore.

What's amazing for me is F1 came up with those weird wheel covers to aid with airflow and heat dissipation what maybe like 2 or 3 seasons ago...

The M5 had them what like nearly 20 years before that!

:praise:

I think they are uber cool!
