After parking the car in June and not having touched it since, we drove it to Redstar Raceway for the BMW CCG time trail series to join in on the fun. The track was done in reverse (or at least in reverse to the last time we did it) so it was like learning a whole new track. Redstar is super technical, so it takes some time to learn the track and also requires a predictable and confidence inspiring car. With me and Mark sharing a car, we effectively get half the track time, so the track learning does not quite reach completion over a weekend. Add to this an unpredictable car with the tendency to lock up the front wheels, the confidence in the car does not build up which results in slow lap times.
Now, if this all sounds like thinly disguised race-driver excuses, that is exactly what they are. According to the Trackaddict app, my best time was consistently in the 2.19s, however the official timer put me at 2.22.6. Not very flattering. My previous best on the track was a 2.20.6 before we did a few upgrades on the car
Considering how hard this car gets beat on and how little work we do on it, it is about time that money was spent on it. Cue the center silencer on the exhaust disintegrating with spectacularly loud results. Now consider also my ears on the hour drive back to JHB. Your moment of silence is appreciated 🙉 I'm not quite sure how a stainless exhaust rusts like this, but this will need to get sorted before the next track day. The locking front wheels are also critical as it destroys tyres, lap times and confidence in equally devastating measure. Since one cannot blame the driver, I suspect the issue has to do with the front suspension bottoming out under braking with predictably smokey results.
Anyway, enough rambling, on to the mandatory pics:
