E30 ignition barrel

Hi Guys.

The ignition barrel/steering lock on my E30 is faulty. When I insert the key, the barrel doesn't turn, and I can't unlock the steering wheel. If the issue is with the ignition barrel, there are no new barrels available.

So, my question is, will a later model barrel work; a barrel from an E36 or E46?
Has anyone done a swap that works effectively?
