Hi Guys !
Sorry for the long post , trying to explain my situation .
So I took off the exhaust from my E30 to inspect it , Actually , didn't take it off by choice , I wanted to move the car and the exhaust was just hanging there , The rubber mountings were broken and it would have fallen off anyway .
A brief history , I purchased it complete a long time ago when my original exhaust was destroyed and rusted , The exhaust came of a 325is that had been wrecked ( This was a time when people stripped those cars for parts ) That car did not have an original exhaust but a full stainless steel free flow with a back box and some duel tube things in the center , anyway I took it to an exhaust shop and they changed it a little to fit my car a lowly 88 320i Auto . This exhaust has two pipes going from the front to the back.
To get it to fit they had to extend the length and make it fit onto my "Brospeed" manifold . ( my original manifold was leaking and this was the cheapest alternate at the time for a poor student so I used this) I still have my original manifold .
Anyway they used Mild steel for that extension . Upon inspection , it seems that the Mild steel part had rusted away completely .. The rest of the exhaust seems fine . no rust or holes , no damage at all , just a bit dirty . Just the welding on some of the joints seem to have some surface rust on it and some of the pipes are squashed a little ( Possible due to those same bumps on campus that destroyed my original exhaust)
Would it be fine if I take it to an exhaust shop and ask them to replace the part that rusted away and have it fitted back onto the car?
Can stainless steel rust inside? In the pipes , box and inside those long tube like things that's in the center? How can I check if they are damage, Worn out, or rusty?
I was told by someone that its a Doug Wallace system but I know nothing about exhausts , I have never seen this brand of exhaust and I don't really care what it is . I just need it to stop sounding like a V8 truck .... and I need the exhaust back on the car.
Also , can I replace the squashed pipes , or all the pipes with smaller tubing pipes while keeping the boxes? I feel these pipes are to big ,and when they adapted it to fit my car they didnt do such a good job of it at the bends, Also I don't remember the original pipes being so big . Would that be safe to do?
Thanks for your advice!
