E30 325i Overheating when Idling

Hey All.

I am new here looking for some help with my E30 325i 1987.

When I stop at a robot or just idle my temperature rises, if i don't start moving again i overheat(I pullover and stop before it actually overheats). If I increase my revs with stopped my engine the heat drops but that's no good.

I have replaced the water pump, thermostat and viscose fan. I also replaced my head gasket about 8 months ago.

Where should I look next?

Thanks

Sounds like the system has air trapped in it or maybe the thermostat is faulty or of the wrong temp. A new thermostat can fail so its good to have it checked .

When you replaced the fan, did you just replace the blades or the fan clutch itself?

Did you check whether the cylinder head has no cracks?

I did a full clean of the whole head and replaced 3 of the values while i was there and it looked fine. But it was a while before i started having these issues.

I have bleed it twice, once on a flat surface and then on an incline. I have ha a lot of issues before with bleeding my system properly, so i will try bleed it again.

I checked the thermostat in a pot on the stove and it does open but I am a little unsure about it because my pipe to the radiator seemed a little too cool for hot water to be flowing through it. I will look into this as well.

I just replaced the clutch but the blades are still in good condition as I did replace the blades about 10 years ago when i got the car.

Thanks so much for the quick replies

Head should be pressure tested it is the only way to confirm.

To bleed the car make sure the heater is on (the dial on the left) and the fan to 1st stage.

Hey all.

I have sorted out the problem. :D

It was indeed a bleeding issue which was caused by my radiator return pipe being blocked and having most of my radiator filled with air.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Great to hear you solved the problem ! What was blocking the pipe? You should maybe flush the system to try and get out whatever dirt was in there that caused the first blockage .
