The 320is has the S14 engine from the E30 M3, if you read the article...

The "is" badging wasnt specific to SA. The UK enjoyed alot of sales success with the e30 318is and 320is. The USA also had thier own variations too, with many cars having the smaller first gen rear lights, but with plastic bumpers. The Mtech kits were also more widely available in those countries. Have a look on some of the international e30 forums for all the different variations.

When I worked in Lisbon these 320 were by the dozen. E30 M were. Another question- what was the engine capacity of this e30 m

Then 2500 were sold in Portugal , no jokes, not sure they were m cars. , but "iS" version of the 320 were like citi golfs here :=):
