e28 Suspension set-ups

E30 rears will not fit and they are to light for the E28
E34 will not fit on an E28
E12 fronts will fit on an E28 but E12 rears will not as E12 sits on top of the rear trailling arm and E28 fit on the side.

Best bet is buy the kit designed for the car as anything else will likely be a compromise.

Okay what I have found out so far is that

e30 Fronts will fit but only the front and are shorter by an inch and depending on what springs you use can be lower than this. First picture in the following link has an example of e30 Koni's and e30 80mm lowering springs

Rear E34 Koni's will fit e28's however they are about half an inch higher than The discontinued e28 adjustable Koni's. So would provide some forward rake. (Multiple links, but there was a lot of info on this)

Interesting stuff. But that's not to say they will work together because of the height differences (e30 fronts and e34 rears) and subsequent springs that will be used.

Let me explain to you why the E30 will not fit the E28

Bilstein makes the same shock for the 635 and the 535 however the damping rate is different.
The damping rate is all important in a shock so you could canibalise the E30 to fit the E28 but it would be preferable that you do not as not only the damping rate will be different but the weight of the car on the shock.
Let me give you an example the E30 typically has 260mm discs and the E28 285mm and the brake callipers are also different.
Of course this being your car you are entitled to do with it as you please and my observation is purely "for the sake of the discussion"

agree with a1exander full Bilstein will be better in this case...

but the Koni would work because they are adjustable... remember the spring controls the weight of the car and the shock controls the spring...

so the e30 shock set on a harder setting should be able to control the higher spring rate found on the e28 (more weight means higher spring rate is needed)

buuut i would still say a full Bilstein setup for this car will be the more complete package... however ether setup will be better than monroe or gabriel... If you can stretch the budget go full Bilstein no question on this car...

What shocks and suspension did the M5 use ? My info says " shorter progressive rate springs and single tube Bilstein gas dampers "
Any dealer prices ? - we may be suprised :roflol:
