E12 518 fumes in car

Hi Guys

When driving I get fumes coming into the car.

Exhaust is fine.Fuel lines all fine.

Any idea what the issue could be?

Had a similar issue with an E34 5 Series many many years ago...

There were vents on either side of the boot... That served the purpose of decompression in the cabin. These vents have flaps that are supposed to open and close. In this case they stayed open and allowed fumes into the cabin.

As far as i know there were quite a few older generation models with similar problems.

Not sure about the E12 ? Could be something similar...

I dont think the E12 have those flaps, they vent out the sides on the c-pillars. ( well i know mine doesnt) I would suggest check the boot rubber is fully sealing and not perished or the gasket seals around the rear lights. If perished either will allow the exhaust fumes to be sucked into the boot and car.

Easy way to check, take masking tape and seal the boot, drive the car and see if you still get the same fumes. If no then boot rubber needs replacing, if yes then tape up around the rear lights and drive again. If the problem still persist then check the rear door rubbers too

my suggestion / 2c would be:

the filler pipe that goes into your fuel tank, the gasket/seal between this and the body of the car may be leaking or where it connects to the fuel tank.

this is ofcourse if you only smell fuel when filling the tank or after you have been to the petrol pumps...

It is only when driving I get these fumes :smashScreen:

So irritating I do not want to drive the car
