Dual Mass Fly Wheel E90

Hi guys. I own a 2011 E90 320i. I have a suspected flywheel rattle...now the question is must/should I replace with a duel mass or can I go for a solid one. LUK has a kit that includes a solid wheel at half the price. My understanding with the dmf is to absorb vibration for a smoother ride. Isn't that only applicable to diesel engines with a lot of vibrations. Xan anyone please shed some light on this dilemma. Thanks. Dewald

:skit: Ummm Im thinking DM is only in the Diesels. :tiptoe: I might be wrong. did you get any quotes yet ?

I did get quotes. R4500 on the clutch kit, R9000 on the dmf. According to bmw they checked my VIN and it uses a dmf. But like i said LUK has a kit with a solid. No idea what to do.

DMF makes for more smooth gear changes. I looked into the same thing a while ago. I would recommend DMF

If you go with a solid flywheel you will need a sprung clutch. You will still lose some of the refinement. I wouldn't bother rushing to replace unless there is a bad vibration while releasing the clutch. Personally I would go with dmf instead of solid because of daily drive.

Buy a new LUK clutch and LUK DMF from autozone or beras, around 9k total for both. No need to reinvent the wheel here, its not a race car so forget about solid flywheels.

Due to a couple of unforseen events...I have to dig deeeep into my wallet. That's the only reason I'm trying to find out how big the difference would be between a solid and a dmf.

Nobody said BMW ownership would be cheap. Solid flywheels are for race cars, not street cars. Stick to the stock parts and you won't have other issues down the road.

Giz, for interest sake.

What would be the difference if we put solid flywheels in?

You would need to have a custom clutch made up every time you need to change it. Not something you can get from any autozone. Flywheel chatter is not something people want on a modern street car. Idle hunting more prone on solid flywheels and far easier to stall the car as solid flywheels are lighter than dual mass ones.
