Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), is a computerized technology [1][2] that improves the safety of a vehicle's stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction (skidding).[3] When ESC detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help "steer" the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually, such as the outer front wheel to counter oversteer or the inner rear wheel to counter understeer. Some ESC systems also reduce engine power until control is regained. ESC does not improve a vehicle's cornering performance; instead, it helps to minimize the loss of control. According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one-third of fatal accidents could have been prevented by the technology.

Afaik the only way u will see any lights pop up on the dash is if u hold the button in for a couple of seconds but this turns the thing off so if there no lights showing it's on like it shud be unless you drifting or something of that sort:fencelook:

DSC is always on except if in M Dynamic Mode or when you hold it in for 2 secs (this deactivates DSC

When in M Dynamic Mode, its sort of half on, so it allows you to spin wheels and get it a bit side ways but the DSC will stop you at some point (usually when you got a bit too brave)

Not sure about you M guys, usually there is a DTC button (dynamic traction control - correct me if I'm wrong) which is engaged when pressed once, illuminating the DTC sign in the cluster. When held for about 10seconds it switches off completely.

Ok - that explains why it seems to go crazy ,then with some input from me,it corrects and snaps the tail end back in place. Its truly an interesting feeling when that happens - M dynamic on all the time and in sport plus mode - hhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeha, not really, cos I got a telling off the other day.Not from the coppers, the wife

The M3 doesn't need to be pressed for 2sec or what even duration, like the DTC in other BMWs. Its either on or off.

However I think if you don't have MDM then you can press it once for half way off or hold it until its completely off and the symbol in on the dash.

my DSC light comes on at anytime if i press the button in just a touch. im no expert but theres a problem with yours if the light aint coming on when you press the button. perhaps a sensors to be cleaned up? nevertheless there is very little difference having it on or off, its an advanced safety measure more especially at high speed...sometime back i put the DSC off and foot my 330d in 2nd gear, car burns rubber.

Assume you have the E46(DSC Button) then its like on/off. The E90 has a DTC button, that needs to be held in.

it does make a difference on my e46 m , when on it will allow you to spin for a sec or two on launch but you try changing quick to 2nd and it bogs you right down instantly, when off its fun and games

i noticed that if you press the button quickly it does nothing, you have to hold it in for just under a 2nd then the light shows, not sure if the e46 m's have the half or full traction control function

There's 3 DSC modes on the E46. On, Semi off and off completely. If you press the DSC button and release the traction light will illuminate meaning it's semi off and will kick in at some point. If you hold the button down for a few seconds the traction and brake light will both be illuminated meaning the system is completely off. That's my understanding.

It makes a huge difference on my 330

As far as i know, since the E46 BMW introduced DTC and DSC. While they might appear to be one in the same, theyre actually not. You get to activate and deactivate them using the same DSC button. When DSC button is pressed in for a second or two, you deactivate the DTC. Dynamic Traction Control, you will see a yellow DTC light on you dash. Which in turn allows for wheel spinning. Which also helps for fast pulloffs, that way the car doesnt bog down. Yet take a corner to wildly and the DSC will still kick in. Ie:no drifting. Now press and hold the DSC in for 5 odd seconds, and everything turns off. You will see a circle now on your dash with DSC that lights up. Now the Dynamic Stability Control is off. This in turn allows for wheel spinning and drifting. But be careful, there will be NO driver aids switched on at this time!

non M e46 came with 3 flavors of stability control non of this has anything to do with the e92 M3 :roflol:

ASC
DTC I
DTC II

ASC
is the early stability control i do not know much about it other than it was less advanced and not as smooth as the DTC

DTC I
came out on the pre F/L e46 and is ether totally on or off with the press of a button (this is what i have on my e46)

DTC II
has two off modes:
press button and it goes half off
press and hold button for a few seconds and it it totally off (more lights come on to tell you its totally off dont remember which ones :fencelook: )

Were these all being offered simultaneously? I've got DTC II.
