driving on a flat tyre ...non run flat !

So we went to the rescue of a client today, with a BMW130i, he had totally trashed 2 Yokahama tyres, only a portion of the sidewalls was left on the rims, both rims also indicated tarmac rash.

it tuns out that he knew or had heard of run flat technology somewhere along the line, but he was convinced that it is the Rim that gives his car the run-flat edge, and so

with normall tyre fitted, he thinks nothing of it when he gets a warning that the tyre pressures were gone, and he continues to drive until eventually 2 tyres centre tread completely separate from the sidewalls, and now the car is driving on expensive BMW rims.:argh::argh:

in our shop he is asking what is the matter with his rims that this happened, as his car should have run-flat technology.

It took a lot of drawing of pictures etc to show the client that run-flat technology has nothing to do with the design of the rim, but rather on the design of the run flat tyres themselves w.r.t. strengthened side walls etc.

Such stupidity should not be driving a BMW and stuffing it up. That's the type of person who only sees it fit to service the vehicle only AFTER something goes wrong.
