Drivetrain malfunction

Hi guys,

Last night saw my Brand New F30 320i get towed...and it was not an accident.
For goodness sake, I didn't even update my garage on fanatics yet.

So last week Friday I went ahead with the deal and got myself the new wheels. Was really enjoying everything about the new car. The awesome standard sound which is much improved from the E90, the responsive auto gearbox etc etc. Until last night!

The car has 1225kms on the clock. So it's juts about run-in. I was driving for about 50mins and at an intersection, the car shudders profusely, and error message stating "Drivetrain, continue the journey at moderate speed..." pops up and the car just switches off.

Firstly, I could not continue much journey at all as the car switched off and when I tried to restart, it shudders and cuts off with the same warning message.

Stuck in my car waiting for BMW road side assistance to get to me (1h30mins later), I did some googling of this error. It seems it's happening quite often. I read of an M5 doing 150km/h on the freeway and the same issue arises. Most of the issues I came across were in the Europe market.

Now, I am quite pissed off for a few reasons:
1. This is a concerning fault that BMW needs to make their customers aware off
2. If such a fault arises, the turnaround time for a technician and towtruck to get to the car should not be 1h30mins. At night and at a busy intersection isn't the best place to be stuck at.
3. The error message says I can drive at a moderate speed. This would have been nice, so that I could drive somewhere safe, however, the car refused to even idle before switching off again
4. This is a brand new vehicle with 1225kms on the clock! Aren't these cars intensively tested before being released to the consumer?
5. BMW only provides a courtesy vehicle for 24hrs! What do I do after that?

Can someone please advise me if you were in a similar situation and if you want to take this up higher, how do I approach the situation?

Return the car, theres the CPA , use it.

If BMW is able to sort out the problem with in the day then all should be fine, any more time trouble shooting i would not want the car back as they might be stripping and checking to guess what could be the problem.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice and replies.

They did get back to me. Apparently the fuel pump seized.
They promised to get the car back to me today.

I don't know how to go forward with this.

I have 2 options, either I keep the car in strong faith that this won't happen again or I can return the car in accordance to the CPA and ask for a new one.

The motor industry is an anomaly in the practical application of the Consumer Protection Act at the moment. The industry is currently contending that they don’t have to follow Sec 56 of the CPA, which covers the 6 months implied warrantee, where the consumer can choose between a refund, return or repairs, if the product is defective. They say their warrantees overrule that, so they normally fix the problem, but won't entertain refunds or returns.

So right now your recourse would be to allow them to repair it under warrantee at zero penalty to you.

If it is the fuel pump, just replace it and move on. Infant mortalities happen every once in a while, the chances of it happening again is very slim.

The dealership will give you as much resistance as possible if you want to try CPA route, and that will just take a lot of your time and leave a bitter aftertaste in your mouth.

The lesson of the story

You should have gone with the 320d and not left the dark side :biglol:
Hope your brakes are ok because the petrol models have a recall and wonder if they fixed it yet

Hi Guys. Ryan was it your high pressure fuel pump or the low pressure that sits in the tank? I know its under motorplan. What was the cost?

Im sitting with a similar issue. Guys please help. Car showed drivetrain and fuel supply- possible to continue journey. After driving just 1 km. Car then just died. F30 328i. Car won't even crank. Had it towed home.

Disconnected the battery. Let it cool down for 3 hours. Car then started as if nothing was wrong. Scared to drive it tho. All mechs not working christmas period.

Any suggestions?

I wont drive it until its checked. If its the fuel pump it may leave you stranded over the big days.

So advanced these cars are: Fuel pump packs up, car throws Drivetrain error.... :thumbdo:

I doubt you will get you vehicle replaced or be refunded.... Dealers will push back saying it was a part malfunction which was replaced with a new Part.

If you want to take any recourse, you need to contact the financial service provider who financed the car as the car is on their name, raise the issue with them and get them involved because on your own, the dealership will come with stories...

Sorry! Not the experience you expect from a new car :thumbdo:

I'd give it a chance if it's just the pump but if anything else goes wrong or if they start changing stuff until the problem disappears then take them to task
