Driver side door lock doesn't open with key fob - Must use key

Hi Guys,

I've recently developed a problem. When I press the unlock button on the key fob, the driver side door lock does not open. I have to put the key into the lock and turn it. If I press the unlock button twice, then the passenger side door unlocks (but still not the driver side).

This used to happen intermittently, but now it happens every time.

I think it's the actuator in the driver side door. I phoned the dealer for a quote, it's R 950 for the part and about R 1000 labour. Do you think this is worth it, to save some time? Or is it an easy DIY?

What do you guys think? Am I right in my guess it's the actuator? and what are my alternatives? Has anyone had a similar problem?

I replaced my lock, if you got small hands it's really easy.
FYI I'm no mechanic expert.
What I did is GTS (google that sh1t)

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would put some feedback on the site for any other z4 drivers who experience this problem.

I was quoted R2400 for one door lock actuator (part# 51-21-7-202-146) which I thought was very expensive. Although it is the correct price (I even checked overseas suppliers)

After phoning around and speaking to multiple dealerships, I found out the this specific item was part of a recall, and that you can purchase the replacement set (two door lock actuators for R 950). That's a quarter of the price! (part # 51-21-7-263-088).

The BMW service adviser did not know about this and I had to do all the leg work and even source the part from their parts department.

Also, after replacing the part, the door no longer has that "tinny" sound when you close it. It sounds more solid like other models.

For reference, the labour charged by BMW was R 950 to fit the part. Which I think is reasonable after checking the step by step guide online. Well it was better for me as I saved time, as well as not having the risk of damaging the parts/interior/clips etc as well as someone with much better workmanship doing the job.
