These cars have Double Vanos
BMW 6-cylinder engines M52TU, M54, M56, 1998-2006
3-series E46 98-05, 5-series E39 99-03 / E60 & E61 02-05, 7-series E38 98-01 / E65 & E66 02-05, Z3 E36 98-02, Z4 E85 02-05, X3 E83 03-06, X5 E53 00-06
Double vanos seals are easy to change and dont require also to special tools :rollsmile:
I would still print this DIY and give it to your mechanic (if you dont want to DIY) so he knows the correct way to do this and you know you getting the best job possible
A new valve cover gasket will need to be fitted if it has not been changed within the last 50 000km to avoid oil leaks this can be got at BMW or the workshop doing the work
