Does my VANOS need some tlc...

Hi all.

A few weeks ago I noticed some power loss at around 3k rpm's and when I swith on the A/C. The feul consumtion went up as well.

So I went on the google machine and read that it could be the VANOS seals or the VANOS solenoid... and of course theres a test, and that is to unplug the solenoid and see if the problems go away.

So I did this, and the low revs power is back, the A/C doesn't kill the engine and it seems to be lighter on feul...

Now the question is," Is it the VANOS seals, the solenoid itself or the air flow meter?"... The google machine said that all of these could cause this problems.

Maybe someone out there had the same problems... I could use the input.

Thx

The VANOS solenoid is a relatively inexpensive item if I remember correctly they are around R250 each. Maybe just replace it and see how it goes.

Will I be able to get it from the stealers? Or where would you say...

The Vanos solinoid - maybe, but they want to sell you a complete vanos with the old troublesome seals @ +/- 8k. To do the Beisan Vanos upgrade is pretty straight forward and you will feel the difference. That is... if that's the problem. Get hold of an OBD tool and read the codes - perhaps a sensor is bybye. But if the milage is high (150k+), strongly consider the seals anyway.

I had a slight flat spot when pulling away and when changing gears in the 3k rev range and after I replaced my seals which I got from free rider the problem went away and I got better performance and I had 130k on the clock when I did this.
