Disappointed

Sorry, need to vent a bit. Having a bad time currently with BMW. First, personally had to cough up R30k for injectors on my N54 135i with only 115k km on. Fair enough, I knew it was a problem child when I bought it. But then Friend at work is waiting for his 228i that has a coolant level problem at BMW for 3 weeks now. Very unethically they are trying to sell him an upgrade car now. WTF? Other friend had his engine in his 125i replaced. Friend with 320i had coolant pipe come loose. To top it off, this morning we spotted a 2 Series pull over with steam billowing from engine. Very difficult to defend the brand or continue buying it. Thoughts?

Yea, but its not just BMW

Better, faster, cheaper, built by accountants, for the environment.

Build quality is NOT what its used to,

Every single manufacturer is going through this at the moment

Personally, I blame the tree hugging hippies....

I know how you feel. love driving my E39 but it has overheated just too many times for me to trust it enough to daily drive it. It is now on its third radiator. So I mostly use it to run errands on weekends.

Plastic cooling systems? Really? Plastic can only expand and contract so many times before it cracks. Why, why why?

There is the fact that there are unplanned failures or things just go wrong, due to manufacturing, operations etc.... However when we as customers pay a premium, for me its the after sales support that counts-always. So what was provided to compensate your friend for the 3 week wait ie provide a car for a couple of days, discount?

Yup, in my case at least the service is good. Me and the friend got a loaner etc. But yes, we pay a premium and expect it to last longer than average. Must admit, build quality is good, no rattles in my 7 year old car, but why so many mechanical failures?

So many mechanical failures leads me to believe the vehicle is not being maintained to the spec you think it is. Dealerships are known for skimping out on service parts.

You'll be surprised when last your air filter and fuel filter were replaced, if ever. Nevermind the other items they invoice you for but don't replace.

Learn to DIY. Basic things and services are no more difficult than building a puzzle for grown-ups. It's the best investment you can make; the time you spend on your car and the knowledge you gain.

I agree chief. One thing that i've learnt these cars are driver intensive so one need to put some effort to learn the car. I've done basic fluid change, steering fluid and oil.
Funny you speak of air filter change, i can concur with you from personal experience that an air filter wasn't changed in over 4 years, on my M while the car was under motor plan with the previous owner- dealership BMW Sandton Kunene (which has subsequently closed down).
Out of interest who recommend for out of motor plan support i.e. bearings; etc...

Chef, if I were to DIY and change oil, filter etc. between every BMW service point, would this void the MP? I've avoided doing so in case there are MP issues.

Cheers.

Didn't realise you had motorplan on with over 115k km on the clock.

It would indeed void any motorplan left.

The most well maintained car, and best running car for its age that I have ever seen, is a car that has been to the dealers for its first run-in service and never again.

In your case, it happens with any brand.

Personally, I like to know the previous owner and his ways in looking after a car, especially over 100k.

I have had a N54 for over 4 years and got it on 40k - now on 110k.

I have only ever replaced a water pump, a coil pack.

Other than that it has been good to me - but like the guys say - I have had it maintained properly and fitted the right parts.

What's wrong with accountants?

Engineers - " this is what we want to build, its the best quality and high tech - it costs 300k to biuld"

Accountant " we will give you 150K make a plan"
